Ocean (Server) Maintenance - March 25, 2013
We are reducing the total number of Oceans (servers) available not only to optimize overall playability, but also to bring Pirates together in a closer community.
Sailing forward, the Oceans available after this change still include the most active servers that historically enjoy the most robust daily population of Pirates. We have also retained a good range of less populated servers for Pirates who prefer a quieter, less-crowded play experience. We hope you find the Caribbean's new server lineup to your liking. Sincerely,The Crew @ Pirates Online |

Oh my, some of those oceans they got rid of were home to a number of guilds.
14 total are gone now. Among them are Antassa, Caicos, Cortevos, Eustabia, Galaira, Guines, Hassigos [that was heavily populated], Kokojillo, Legassa, and Levica [like Bart mentioned, it too was popular]. Obviously, this was done to cut costs and not to bring pirates closer to one another. Players in need of such closeness can find them in forums like these for that. |

Of those three of them I used on a regular basis. The last couple times oceans were removed it was the same thing, ones removed were ones I also used often. Only 15 left now.............
D just needs a little advertising at the exits of the Pirates of the Caribbean rides in their theme parks to draw in new costumers. |

...weren't Caicos and Cortevos the big looting servers too?
Saddens me to see this, and as others before have said, it is likely due to costs and not "bringing pirates together." It was already quite crowded before this, now I wouldn't be surprised to see only one or two quiet servers on average, with maybe none at peak hours. On a side note, does anyone else feel like the tone of this news message is a bit different from how they usually are? I can't exactly describe how it feels different, but it feels less... Disney-esque? Meaning, it has a very serious and rather objective tone that isn't usually seen in POTCO News. Could just be because it is having to do with maintenance, or maybe I'm imagining it all. Not the most hopeful of news, but we'll see where we're heading. |

Did they increase the sizes of the servers? If not, we might have a problem here.

I just love how this is the third time that servers have been removed from the game and only NOW they mention something.

lol 103 replies at the Blog were posted. I guess mine was too hot to handle:
Wow! These Oceans have disappeared much like so many friends I once knew. Too few are still as dedicated as I am to the game. Frankly, they could have taken this same action last year for the same reason but didn't. So their action is either sudden, or planned. If sudden, then this can be traced to the sheer number of players unable to buy UA with a Game Card since November. That's a loss of $49.75 per person who would have paid 5 months worth of UA. Or from another standpoint, a loss of $4,975 from 100 players, $9,950 from 200 players, $24,875 from 500 players, etc. This, of course, excludes those who have cancelled their credit card subscriptions during this same time period for whatever reasons. Now, if it was planned, then it's a very calculative move on their part. I hinted about it in another thread. Their new game is set to debut in August (originally June) aimed for kids to buy their $74.99 starter kits. Its $5 less than the annual subscription we pay for POTCO. Or, from another standpoint, $4.65 less had they bought Game Cards from any 8 month period totaling $79.60. Simple aggressive marketing to herd the kids from all current DIMG online games to buy it and subscribe. Nothing wrong with that really. And why would kids not want it when they can actually play any of their favorite pirate characters with Infinity which can't be done in POTCO. Cant' even pirate with their favorite characters in POTCO. Only complete their quests and earned something for it. That's just how POTCO is structured. I saw the stuff at Amazon after clicking the link from DIMG's ad. They can buy additional pirate figurines like Davy Jones. Gee, when will we ever see him in POTCO? Kids won't have to wait and that's fine if kids end up liking Disney's new game. Some will see this in a negative way. Don't. Well, I can't stop you, but look at the positive: ask POTCO if they're willing to offer subscriptions through Amazon like DIMG is willing to do. Gee, how easy it would be to buy an Amazon card and load it up to purchase a subscription for Pirates Online. Gosh I hope they intended that all along. If not, write to them and ask for it. Its a win-win for them all around. The choice is yours. |

I'm a long time POTC member, since January 2008.
I totally disagree with the decision to remove these servers. First of all, there have been NO POTC activities since April 2012 when the so called NEW sail emblems were added. Found out that Disney had released a number of Developers. Now this, the removal of oceans, again cut backs to POTC to save money! And maybe a release of more Developers and the reduction of servers they have to maintain. I pay $80.00 a year, now I'm getting less for my money than I originally bargained for. Legassa was one of my favorite servers as I prefer quiet servers, and Legassa was also clean and smooth. THIS THING ABOUT REMOVING SERVERS TO IMPROVE GAME PLAY IS A LOT OF HUMBUG! It was hard enough to get away from rude and indignant pirates with the full compliment of servers we had before the removal of other servers, now it will be almost impossible to be free of the rude and disrespectful kids. I say STAND with me and DEMAND Disney restore the deleted servers! Black Beard Blacks Brigade |

I think this is theoretically a good move, however I'm scared of what it could mean for the future of the game. I hope that pirates rebounds after the release of the new POTC movie.

My home server (Ocean) was Legassa, as this is where I originally started in the game and got welcomed into my first guild Savvy's Academy which seems to have died recently
