Traditional Pirate or Modern Pirate?
Kind of random...but I'm curious,,
We all know what the traditional pirate looks like and entails. But as we move into the modern, the current, and the future, what is YOUR definition and vision of the "modern pirate"? My definition of "modern pirate" would be non-traditional...just subtle hints of leather, metal, and dishevelment, kind of like this look: ![]() And do you prefer "traditional pirate" or your vision of the "modern pirate"? |

Modern piracy (Particularly the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, South China Sea, Gulf of Aden, Persian Gulf, etc.) is mind-bogglingly viscous.
Romanticizing piracy of the 1600s is one thing; real life pirates today though, have no redeeming qualities. |

Pirates of today probably look nothing like pirates of old with a modern touch. Those bone head pirates who where attacking cruise liners a year ago where most likely some poor guys in t-shirts and shorts with an ak-47 who ran away at the first sighn of the navy. |

Historical pirates were likely just as thuggish, gang. Only the flamboyant ones got remembered. Kinda' like Al Capone gets remembered but most of his Chicago mob goons are long forgotten - they were the norm but he was the stand out.
The pirate captains are the ones in the history books. Their dress, demeanor, attitude, etc. Most modern day pirates are simple collection of like-minded crooks, and standing out is probably NOT the smart thing. |

Having met a first-hand survivor or pirates in the Philippine Sea (in our modern era,) it is clear to me that modern pirates use much more advanced torture methods, leaving much fewer survivors (and then, only on accident.) While only large ship captures are deemed news-worthy here, smaller scale piracy (which then and now, was the more viscous form,) is a daily occurrence, in most parts of the world. |

Im just saying the "pirates" now a days are just like gangs with boats, robbing people. It was like that back then aswell but more on a broad scale becuase of less police force and undiscovered places to hide etc.
dunno where you at but down here in FL ive been on boating trips/ beach trips and have never had a run in with pirates. oh and never heard of any when Ive been too the north sea in Germany, but Ill check next time I go

One difference now, vs. then, is that now it is cheaper to get started. An outboard motor and a mounted gun. Another main difference, is that pirates now aren't executed on the spot, nor hung from a yardarm after a mock trial. |

nope all of the worlds ocean isnt patrolled as much as the notrh sea, but alot of is thats why there are no priates, plus when it comes to fighting against the law now a days, the law always wins. p.s. oh and pirates are not killed on spot? those guys that attacked the cruise ships would beg to differ..if they could talk. |
