People in Pirates are rude. I learned that just from spending a few minutes at Abassa.

But there are nice people. Ignore the rude people, or just TP away from them.

I've been playing online since 1986 and agree that in the last 5 years, the 'nastiness' has been rising. Much of it stems from a feeling of 'ownership' by people who have played a game for a while. They know and are known by the community and feel a sense of 'this is our playground'. Now, I am not attacking anyone here...I've been here since closed beta...but in the background.

Players' ages are not the factor here. I've seen it from young and old alike. We get protective of what we have established and grown with our online friends. When newcomers start showing up, our collective noses suddenly rise in the air and start excluding others. We forget that everyone was new at one point.

It really doesn't take any effort at all to be mean and nasty to others. But it does take the effort of good people with good hearts to welcome everyone when they arrive at the docks. That newcomer who is off loading their bags could be your best swabbie and mate in the future.

Treat others as you want to be treated. A dubloon's worth of help could help ye gain a treasured friend!

Think about people as wine (or rum if you like).
Good people are good wine.
Bad people are bad wine.
After a while, good wine gets better, especially when paired with other good wine and good food(a good environment in POTCO). After a while bad wine gets worse, especially when paired with bad wine and bad food.
When a good wine is paired with bad wine, the bad wine is too stubborn to do anything, so the good wine is slowly turned bad.

Remember: All wine tastes differently.

OT: for some reason I'm very philosophical this morning, must be the craziness.

Avoid the controversy, drama, etc. Try not to play into their petty tricks. Kill them with kindness and try to represent what you would feel the game really is, a community of quality pirates who enjoy the game.

If that don't work, try any combination of hitting Report, Ignore and change servers.

Post Asking for permission to attack enemies?

People are getting so much ruder now that the new loot system is out. The chance to get a great new weapon has caused people to go crazy. I have been told many times to attack other enemies because I didn't ask to join them. At Darkhart, other pirates have told me to stop attacking because I didn't ask first.

Why do I need to ask permission to attack an enemy? Why do we have to ask to attack an enemy? Not one group owns an enemy, even if they are trying to level up. Groups of pirates are claiming enemies and they get mad if you attack with them. I was in the Thrall area with my friend and a group of pirates called us rude for not asking them to attack. I was called a little kid and a rep stealer just for attacking an enemy they were attacking. I am not a little kid at all or a rep stealer. I may have been too low (at level 38) to attack the Thralls but I still want to attack them. I have a mastered gun and I have strong weapons. People need to stop being rude and mean. It is just a game! Sorry for a rant but this has been bugging me for a while now.

People in the game are rude, but that's the case with every single game out there. As others have said, it's just the nature of the internet, nothing will ever change as long as people can remain anonymous. It's best to avoid those types of players, as not to get yourself caught up in it. Abassa is the main area that those players like to gather... never seem to go there without rude players nearby.

There's a lengthy discussion of this on another thread. Nobody owns an enemy, but it's still considerate to ask if you may join in. The person may be trying to level up, and receiving less rep for their efforts can become frustrating, and take up more of their time than needed. Although, the person could leave, crew up, or simply ask the other person to stop, rather than be rude themselves.

I know that I should ask to join them but I don't want to be told to leave. There are lots of places to level up too.

I too have experienced rudeness pr just plain imaturity no matter what the age.
Just yesturday i had someone harassing me while i was in a crew. He kept bumping me and making all kind of coments. I said nothing for 15 minutes then finally said KNOCK IT OFF JACK and he stopped. I assumed he was a kid.

Bugs the heck out of me too!

If something like this happens, it's best to report the player. But good to hear they stopped before that was necessary.

I've been playing for a couple of years now and I don't see players as being any ruder than back when I started, if anything I believe that Disney has made an effort to clean up a lot of the nonsense that used to go on in game. For example kiddie and teen guilds trying to act like little street gangs in game, going around trying to make grief for other players and guilds. It still occurs but not as much as it used to.

Well Said ex8404
and Semper Fi from another Marine.
You hit the nail on the head and the issue is respect, which seems to be sadly lacking in society today, not just online but in general.

I recall a conversation I heard in public chat a couple years ago I believe I was on Tortuga on one of the busier servers at the time and the conversation involved several lower level players many of them basics complaining about higher level players being stuck up. Anyway the conversation got me to thinking.

First off I'm an adult player I don't want a bunch of kids on my friends list or adults for that matter randomly teleporting to me the instant I log into game, So I tend to be very selective on who I allow onto my friends list.

We are not obligated to Heal or Revive other players doing so is an act of generosity on our part and not an on demand service that we provide.

We are not obligated to add you to our friends list, our crews or our guilds, Begging and demanding such will result in an immediate refusal as will sending blind invites, if you don't even have the courtesy to say hello why should we accept your invitation?

If we crew you on our ships we do expect you to treat us, our ships, and other members of our crew with respect. This includes NOT grabbing the wheel without permission and NOT randomly shooting at everything you see while on our ships.
If you're new and crewing on a higher level players ship, treat that captain and his ship with respect and he will put gold in your pocket. Do otherwise and he won't allow you on his ship again.

We were all new once, I remember how difficult it was in the beginning to get into crew on higher level player ships. Didn't take long to figure out that sending blind friend invites didn't work well. What did work was striking up a conversation when it looked like a higher level was crewing up to sail and politely asking if they could use another gunner. I met some great players this way and began making some good friends.

I'll often be in port in crew, sometimes just crewed up with one friend and having a private conversation with them in crew chat. One thing that annoys me is having some random player come up begging or demanding to be added to crew. I will usually inform them that I'm having a private conversation with a friend and not interested in adding them to crew. At this point most adults will politely go on about their business and leave you in peace. Players who continue to annoy and interrupt the conversation, basically end up on a list of people I will never allow in my crews.

It all adds up to a couple of things, Treat other people with respect and courtesy and most will extend the respect and courtesy to you. Do otherwise and expect just the opposite result.

This actually happens now? I haven't played for a LONG time (at least half a year) and I wasn't here for the introduction to potions or the new weapon drops. I remember being at level 10 and my guild The Kry of Angels take me along on a trip to fight level 40's and that boss at Padres. I remember joining in a fight and people being glad you did, for the extra damage. If people actually tell you that you have to ask permission, I'm going to stay away from the populated servers. No more ideal for me. Only the quiet ones.

A couple of things everyone here has brought up is the age of these people. Now I'm here to say that I'm not an adult player but I know how to act right on the internet. I have to say that it's not exactly the age that matters all the time. Quite frankly I throw away age when I'm playing POTCO and I don't care how old they are. That's because as long as they're not rude or bothering anyone it doesn't matter to me whether they are five or 35.

I believe that ppl's real personalities shine through their avatars- if you associate with them enough on site. I have made many a good frend on POTCO that has carried over to other sites. Agreed that I don't know them from Adam physically-but it's difficult to hide your actual personna for any length of time. As for the rudeness, I believe it is a carry over from rl. Either they are like that in rl or can't get away with it in rl so they act out, so to speak, playing games. Best choice-just tp away or remove them from friend's list. There are many more fish in the sea or should I say Pirates on POTCO...
