Question Does anyone know this....

I'm working on a new avi in Gimp and I'm having an issue with the final layer of the project. I took the phase Dead Men Tell No Tales off the pirates launcher. I did a whole lot of work to crop out the background and reset the words to be stacked instead of banner style. Problem is the words are the wrong color, and aren't showing up. I have the phrase on a transparent background so I can cut and paste it into the avi. I also have a new layer on top of that in the color I want the words to actually be. The question is is there a way for me to merge those layers, and have the words become colorized and the background drop away? At the moment it is something like this.

Solid colored layer

Transparent phrase layer

I want the bottom layer to show through but retain the color of the top layer. Is that possible? If so, how would I do it?
