I too wonder why this thread was dug up?
I am enjoying the roll out of the storyline. Each new item has been building on the last along with game improvements and tweaks that were needed. I am looking forward to the stuff on Test rolling into Live as well and I am glad they are making sure its ready first. I don't see how the Kraken fits into the Jolly Roger storyline but I am sure it will show up at some point. Plunder on mates! Captain Whale |

So, is the game worth playing now? I terminated my membership back in Spring 2008 and haven't seen any real reason to return.

POTCO, in my opinion, is still not anywhere near a "must-play" game. However, being a former member, who left back in Spring of 08, you've definately missed ALOT. Besides my friends and my guild, I enjoy the most about the recent POTCO:
Of course, I still wait to see...
Obviously, we are still looking for a lot from Disney. But I simply can't complain that the current game is boring, in fact, I find it at most times quite fun and exciting! So, to answer your question Captain, I would DEFINATELY consider coming back to the game, Unlimited and all

ROFL!!! Nice posts you two. Crack me up Maximvs!
Well said Captain Del - and I agree if he has been gone that long even the towns would be different to him. A whole new world mate. You should at least get on in Basic and check it out. Fair winds Captain! Captain Whale |

I checked it out on Basic for a week and then was lucky enough to play an Unlimited Preview Day back at the beginning of the summer. Aside from the new maps I didn't find much of interest. The clothing was still boring, the quests were still strenuous and badly-rewarded, and the game still seemed to consist of leveling things and heading to different islands to click on an NPC and then head back wherever you came from. There was essentially no social aspect - most of the pirates I encountered were either totally new to the game or of an extremely high level. Nobody talks, and there doesn't seem to be any great community atmosphere. I was just expecting more, I guess.

Wow Captain, I feel like I am playing a completely different game than you are. Part of that is due to the guild I am in to be sure. I don't have any problems talking to or meeting new pirates. Usually meet them on quest runs and crew up and get to talking. There are a lot of pirates just running around out there to be sure.
The Invasions have certainly brought pirates together. I made another new friend last night during one. Guilds form the social background of the game here. Find yourself one that matches your play style and you are set. I am curious what you would like to see for quests? Most MMO's use quests and most involve going somewhere and doing something then going back. I like the fact that we can teleport to save time in some cases - a lot of games don't do that. The Grind (time it takes to lvl) is very minimal compared to a lot I have played. So what is it you would like to see as far as a leveling system? Just curious mate. Captain Whale |

It's very true that POTCO doesn't have all the things that other MMOs have and I for one am glad they don't. I just want to log on and play, I don't want to work at building up skill trees to be able to build something, don't want to worry about getting enough gold to buy what I can't build from a public auction house that has inflated prices. Don't want to deal with a player based economy that breeds gold farmers. Been there, done that. I have a job, don't need a game that feels like one.
No big secret that I've felt my share of disappointment with the game, look back in this thread far enough and you'll find my comments on it. I even left the game, completely, just walked away. But after being away from the game and playing another pirates MMO, I came back here. I realized that this is the type of MMO I was looking for. If I want to sail, I sail, no gathering the parts, building the ship, getting sunk and losing the ship I built, I just go sail. This is not the type of MMO that everyone is looking for, no worries there, plenty of other games to fit what you are looking for.

Speaking as someone who is in and out at them moment myself, I would still say there are things going on. As Whale said, the invasions have gotten people talking to each other, increasing the social aspect. Since you are standing around for a half hour waiting for the thing to start, people will chat to pass the time. Same is true for after, hop on where an invasion just left and you're sure to see knots of pirates just talking and meeting new people.
While the story seems to be coming on D time, recent events do seem to be leading somewhere. It's a good time to be a pirate I think. Whether its worth Unlimited to you is a wholly personal choice. If you even want to return or not is a personal choice. That said, there are some things that are going on that you simply have to be down on the ground in game to understand. Being told is one thing. Being in game and seeing how things string together is quite another. If you really are interested still, come have a look. Pirates just might surprise you. If not, well, that's ok too. |

I'm sorry to say it myself, but I'm one that's been hanging in for almost 2 yrs and I'm not sure how much longer I will continue to pay for the game. My renewal comes up at the end of the month.
For those of you who are even slightly newer to the game, the "feasts" were new to you, but for me it was just the same old thing they did last year. It wasn't new. Yes they have made the caves much better. Yes they upgraded the islands. The invasions were a novelty and a good way to make a boat load of rep. They did increase the notoriety and weapons cap. And for those that had graphics issues, the streamlining of the graphics probably helped you, but I miss the detail and richness that the older graphics had. Captain.. in response to the social aspect...some guilds had problems with guild breakers over the past year. Many early players have left the game. Then there are all the new people. The social dynamic has changed. Invasions haven't really made for a social activity, except for the need to heal people...lol or revive them. As for myself, I'm still here, but barely. I've started to get tired of waiting for real storyline content and expansion.

It just sort of seems cheap to keep reverting back to the same old dynamic to keep people playing; "dude if you like spend 20 hours leveling this weapon and stuff you'll like get super pro and be able to do stuff and have mad respect and most of all, you'll have spent 20 hours playing our game!"
I mean, all you do is level weapons so you can do more quests, most of which aren't really that engaging. What I want is a huge overarching story that I can affect perhaps with my actions in some small way, or that at the very least I will have at the back of my mind almost as I play the game. In POTCO it seems like you're a pirate, but you don't really do anything really piratey unless you go miles find somebody to tell you to get your butt to plunderin'. It doesn't feel like you're a pirate living in this great world where you're an awesome pirate and you can go out pillaging and maybe that starts up a sequence of events where you're on the run from some crazy bad guys or whatever. You can't even shoot at other players unless you're in PVP, which I find really stupid and boring. You should be able to be like "hey man i don't like you so we're gonna start up a new plot story mode thing in which we don't like each other and we're rival pirates and if you decide to not come on for like 10 years it'll still pick back up where we left off and it will be fun and not a nuisance and very integrated, etc." uh basically i guess I wanted a pirate's life for me from this game and i'm not really sure what I got. maybe the stuff im saying is too advanced, technologically for a small mmo like this to handle but still there's so much they could have done and could still do but i don't know why they don't do it. also another side note the social dynamic is stupid as it stands; just like any other mmo. its a caste system: you've got the insane people who spend 20 hours a day on the game who have these guilds they won't let you into, and then you have these boring new kids who will quit within the week because the game sucks unless you fork over the moneys (a fact that i have no problem with; i just wish that what i was paying for was what i wanted, which is why i quit) and then a bunch of untalkative non-guild-member people. i mean you can say "hi wats up dawg" and they will reply "nawt much" but i find that you can't really build real lasting friendships or relationships in the game that aren't based on going out and kicking some navy butt or shooting at crabs until you level your weapon just saying, i guess Last edited by Sarah; 12-03-2009 at 01:19 AM.. Well Disney sure has done a great job of that. They should really check out the forums to see what WE want. There are a couple main things that we want and they have never put it in, but they put in something like a higher level cap. So why do we care? Disney has to keep up with its viewers. Im sure Walt would have agreed too lol.

It might be because "what we want" will never be a consensus. First priorities change with every pirate.
Some want ship customization. Others want bigger closets and more clothes. Still others want new weapons and skills. The hark and cry for the Kraken ("Release the Kraken!") has been heard for over a year now. Last year it seemed that all anyone was asking for was pets. But all of these "wants" have a common thread. They don't add anything to the story. I am sure that somewhere out there was a pirate whose primary desire was to have nicer looking caves. But after an hour we realized that while the caves may nice, it doesn't change the way the game is played. I don't want closets or clothes. Playing paper dolls bores me. As long as my ship floats, a fancy coat of paint is not important. Weapons and skills are cool but I am fine with what We have been given. The Kraken...what can be said that hasn't already been said. And pets? Well, this pirate doesn't need a helper monkey. So what DO we want? My vote is for new story content. Period. And I realize that all this build up is (most likely) a build up to a new story but even the invasions are getting kind of stale. |
