Do you ever forget that you are talking to real people?
I do a lot. There are things I have said in this game that I would never say to someone in real life. It's so easy to forget that these cartoons have real life people behind them whom know nothing about you. They take what you say and form an opinion.
Sometimes I get sooo frustrated when people in the game take things I say and make their own definition of what I say....basically taking my words and making them something they are not. There may be certain conversations that in real life it's ok, but not for an online community. Sometimes I feel when I say to someone in game that I am a good person and trustworthy with anything(which I am) they should just accept it and not worry about what the context of something I say may have meant. Sometimes I feel, even if I didn't say that, they should just "know it". I know that's wrong but that's how I have felt a lot in the past. My real friends(in real life) describe me as sweet, kind, caring, unique, funny, and fun to be around. If I say something to them, they understand what I mean and what the context of it is because they know me. Though I know that people forget that these people are also behind a computer and all they see is a cartoon talking, they cannot know exactly what kind of person you are, so you have to be careful what you say to others. If you say something, others may take it as something completely different from what it is, especially since words typed out don't show the tone of what the person is saying. I think the best thing from now on, I'm going to be the 100% real me. I am going to take a conversation as if its face to face(where I watch what I say). |

Wow, you sound like a journalist... Unfortunately every word you say or at least your point is correct. you can never fully express an idea properly in game because of the lack of context in which that idea is being expressed. The closest thing to a real life friend in game are those that you have some trust in and have a close idea of how they are in real life by analyzing the few conversations you may have with such pirates. In my case I can say that there's a handful of pirates that I could say that they could have been my real life friends if I would have met them in real life. So, with those pirates I know they will get the context. With all other conversations are game related only to avoid such issues. What I mean is that what you say is going to be taken at face value an the context will be added at the recipients discretion. They might get or they might be offended. Hope that all that makes some sense.

Quite frankly... if someone reads too much into what I say in game in a negative way, I feel its not really my problem. I try and be nice, but if someone reads me wrong because they are hyper sensitive, thats not my issue.
I refuse to tiptoe around people I will likely never meet in real life in fear of being misread. Now on that note, I NEVER say anything inappropriate, and I keep all my talk game-related. I don't get into the things I see going on in places like Abassa - I play with my other half, so, we tend to sit back and laugh at some of the drama. I DO have a few Real Life friends in game - but those people are usually VERY easy to pick out and you usually 'connect' with them easily. (For me, all adult players) We do NOT talk about R/L things IN game. We save it for out of the game, and even there its all family friendly and safe talk. =) I think its best, in ALL facets of life - to NOT take oneself too seriously. But... as I said, in a game - I keep it gameplay related, and don't worry about what people think of HOW I word things. I don't get into anything that would even come close to possibly even getting me banned - which I never have been. I like my test server access too much to risk a ban! |

I think one of things things to remember is that you never know who you are talking to or their age. Moreover, just because a Pirate is male or female doesn't mean anything. I know several players that have both male and female characters.
Another important thing to keep in mind is you have no idea how much truth is behind what another player is stating unless you know them in real life. Having said that, be careful how much information you share. Guard your words and actions <---- I never forget that one

Im my opinion age and gender....same thing in terms of what knowing that info can do. Knowing my age and gender doesnt do anything for anyone, there are millions of people that are my age and obviously many more that are guys. Age though...i think 17 and older it's ok if someone wants to reveal their age. I'm not saying it's ok to ask age. 16 and under shouldn't reveal their age in my opinion.

I generally talk with my hands, so I could see some missing my points. (Close your fist, draw lips on the thumb and on the revealed part of the index finger and the area between the two appendages, and there you go!) Regardless, I had a friend who turned out to be much younger, one who turned out to be much older, so yeah.
