Pirates of the Mafia Game Mechanics

The Basics

There are two teams: the pirates and the Navy. Members of the Navy will pretend to be pirates, and it's up to the real pirates to figure out who among them is a traitor. In order for the pirates to win, they need to find and lynch every last member of the Navy. For the Navy to win, they have to get rid of just enough pirates to make their group the majority.

There are three phases: The Day Phase, the Trial Phase, and the Night Phase.

• During the Day Phase, the pirates vote on a person whom they think is a member of the Navy.
• During the Trial Phase, the three people with the most votes are given one last chance to prove that they are really pirates. Players can then change their vote if they see fit.
• During the Night Phase, members of the Navy vote on which pirate they think they should remove from play.

Additional information:

• After signing up for the game, you will receive a PM asking to confirm that you will play the game. To confirm, visit the Check-In Thread.
• Sign-ups close on -------, and the game will start -------.
• The entire game will take place on the forums in the POF Mafia Contest forum. Any discussion held outside of those forums may result in a disqualification.

The Story

Documenting the events of the game is the Story Thread. In it, the identities of those voted out of the game will be revealed, and occasionally hints will be slipped in admist the regular dialougue. Just remember that just because a person sounds guilty, doesn't mean they are! And just because they sound innocent...


The The Game Masters (GMs)

The Game Masters run the game. Every phase, one of us will post a thread for voting, and a chapter in the story. Also, if you have a special role (see next section), you can use it by sending a PM to us.


Special Roles

To make the game more interesting, random players will be assigned special roles that either give them an advantage in the game or allow them to manipulate gameplay. Here is an example of one of the special roles:

Character: Jack Sparrow - The Savvy Pirate

• Side: Pirates
• Effect: Once every Night Phase, you may investigate a player in order to learn who's side their on. The result will be given the following Day Phase. Unfortunately, if the person you investigate has a Special Role, the results will turn up as inconclusive.
• How to: To use this effect, send a PM to both GMs at any Night Phase specifying who you wish to investigate.

If you have a special role, something similar the above quote will be in your Welcome Aboard PM.

The Rules

• Post at least once every four phases. If you don't, you will be removed from the game. (You will still win if your team wins, but only as long as you have posted at least once.)
• Once you are dead... You cannot discuss the game with any living players. Anyone caught doing so will be immediately disqualified.
• Do not spam. Any posts that do not contribute to the game will be considered as spam and deleted.
• Follow ALL POF site policies at all times during the game. You do need to toss accusations at one another, but keep it clean.
• Discuss the game in the Mafia forums ONLY! If you discuss with users outside of that area there is a possibility for information about who is on which side to get leaked. If you are suspected of cheating and found to be guilty you will be disqualified from the game. This includes Private Messages and POTCO!!!
• Do not remove yourself from invisible mode. This is a precaution put in place to keep all roles and sides secret. If you remove yourself from this mode you will be disqualified immediately.

We withhold the right to change these rules while the game is not in play at anytime as we see fit to make Mafia as fair and enjoyable for all our members.

By signing up to play, you agree to all of the rules found above.

However, feel free to share your special role with other players, if you want to. (NOTE: You're allowed to lie about this. If you don't have a special role, you can say you have one, and if you have one already, you can say you don't or that it's different from what it really is.)
