Rapid reload is a must if you ask me, the reload time to get three more cannons is long if you ask me. Really put some points on that.

Put some points on the regular cannon ball, firebrand, and lightning (Don't know the exact name).

I'm basic access, so I don't know the rest of the skills by heart.

the explosive ammo sounds good but dont waste your points on it. the range on it is very small (the ship has to be almost on top of you before it will hit it).

im lvl 25 cannon and can pretty well solo most ships except for juggernaunt but he is another story.
mostly i use lightning as its effective at tearing off the sails if aiming at them or destroying the hull if aiming at hull. u will want to put all 5 points in it as its worth it.
chain shot and grape shot are a waste as well unless they release somethng in the future that the grape may work for.
lead balls and barrage is also maxxed as its a nice fallback if u run outta lightning ammo. they deal a hefta amount of dmage aswell.
have 4 points in fury ammo and it does a good job aswell.

i dont have any points in rapid reload since lightning and barrage are maxed, it dont take long to sink a ship.

I think fury is worth maxing. If you're sinking one ship and another gets too close, or one drops on you, maxed fury is great for sinking them before they sink you. And, I'm with Raven on this one... maxed lightening does enough damage per hit that you don't need skill points on the rapid reload. You can either use it to take out the sails of the ship first, and then plug away on it with something that does less damage for max points, or aim at the hull and sink it quickly enough.

I also max out the regular cannonballs and firebrand is good to put extra points on.

And for 25 percent more damage from all of the cannon ammo, I max (each point gives you 5 percent more damage) the passive cannon skill that increases cannon and grenade(?) damage.

Thats a good question.

It might be helpful if ship PVP ever comes back out, as the cannonballs would work in a similar fashion as the grape shot (I think) and would be effective against enemy crew if you get left on your ship when boarding an enemy ship.

Other than that, I'm not really sure what advantage there is with that skill.
