The trick to weapons is not to put a lot of points on low or weak skills so those attacks can get the most REP from an enemy NPC....
For example, you would put 1 point on Hack, Sweep, Brawl and Taunt for the Cutlass and use those attacks so it would take longer to kill the NPC - giving you full 100 REP when the enemy dies... Ironhaks Guide to REP is the best by far... Click Here to read the entire Guide Good luck - search on a few toehr threads as well to see other weapons and how others may have configured them to get larger attacks

Everyone builds their pirate differently. Where you put your skill points depends on what kind of pirate you want. If you don't care about rep, and want super strong weapons, drop as many points into damaging skills as you can. If you're looking to master your weapons quickly (well, relatively) then don't spend points except to unlock new skills.

Pretty much what Max and Sarah said.
Here is my general understanding/approach. If your a PVP'er you will want your weapons as strong as they can be as quickly as they can be, so you will want to apply the skill points to the various weapons skills to do so. This will slow your ability to gain additional reps and further level your pirate/weapon as you continue to progress (because you get fewer rewarded reps) If your a questing type you will want to reserve using available skill points to maximize the amount of rewarded reps you get as your pirate continues to progress. Apply skill points to obtain new skills, but not to further strengthen those you already have. (one exception broadsides on sailing.. fill'em up) Playing a combination, then some form of a happy medium loosely using both options would probably be appropriate (at the pirates own descretion). My level 38 pirate has 1 point on everything that became available, and only a couple items in the whole scope of things with more than 1. Passive skills are generally more useful than the individual skills as they often effect more than one weapon. |

Question: why?
I mean, I know I haven't made that mistake on any of my pirates. What a waste of ten skill points! |

With sailing, its never about the reps for me. It has always been the first skill I master on all of my pirates irregardless. Are you saying you dont put any points on your broadsides? (we are given one in each to start). So to correct you, it would never be a waste of 10 skill points irregardless of ones perspective, 'maybe' 8, but without any information its hard for me to come to that conclusion. It seems obvious to me why someone would put more skill points in them, but as to what effect putting fewer in them would have I dont know. Being able to sink ships with a single broadside helps to fill quests quickly. Windcatcher doesnt even work, how many points have people wasted here?
