Frustrated with Advancement
This has likely been brought up in another thread, and I apologize if I'm rehashing a topic that I didn't take the time to look up. But it's something that I'd really, really like to see fixed.
I think that the current method of gaining XP from bad guys is completely messed up. From what everyone is saying (and I've seen myself), you gain more Notoriety by "button-mashing" and using your lowest level skills. The "trick" to advancing quickly is to avoid putting skill points into any skill, avoid high level combos, and just keep hitting with the most basic skill. Does that really make sense? That actively discourages people from doing some of the cool things with the various skills. Why would the game be designed so that button-mashing is the BEST way to advance quickly? I would really, really like to see a set XP level based on the enemy's level. Make a formula where the Notoriety you receive is based on the difference between the enemy's level and your own. Once you kill him, then you get those points. The method of defeating him and how long it takes should be completely irrelevant! This method would be simpler, would encourage people to develop their pirates, would still take into account the current "color" system to the enemies, and would make a WHOLE lot more sense. I'm curious as to why the developers designed the game as it currently stands in this regard. This seems like a big design flaw. What are the chances that we can voice our opinions enough to have it changed? Oh, and this isn't sour grapes because I'm not advancing quickly enough. My primary pirate is level 27 and has Mastered Sailing. So I've done pretty well for myself. I'm just frustrated that when I use the cool combos and abilities that I've learned, I get less Notoriety for the same enemy than if I just keep hitting the basic attack button. Poor design. |

I agree with you, it does not make any sense the way they made it to gain exp. Having been on very many MMORPG there are none that do any of this, and it should probably be fixed. But remember, the game is barely any old and is being worked on constantly. It may be in the working as we speak.

I can see why they do this, but I agree with you.
If you think about it, it takes more time to use the same attack over and over, than to use your skills, which means you should get more experience points. ~Cpt.Sea

True, but that discourages doing the cool skills. Why would I want to do the fancy moves and special ammo when I get less XP for it? The system is set up to make people NOT want to spend any skill points. It should be designed so that they NEED to spend skill points. Plus, if you have a fixed point value per enemy, you can get a greater range of fighting styles. Some will put points into defensive skills and wear their opponent down. Some will put points into aggressive skills and knock enemies down quickly Some will have a mix. That's a good thing! But right now, everyone benefits from running up to an enemy and hitting attack as quickly as possible. Where's the sense or fun in that?

Yes I totally agree with you. I just mastered a pirate and all her weapons, with low skill points. lol How can you be a true pirate master if you are using only beginners skills?

Put me on that agree list! In fact - it should be in reverse! Instead of swings at the lowest levels adding up to such high REP, only your best skills swings / throws / spells count instead and get more for them (coded in conjuction with the Level of the enemy). At least this would encourage the use of higher skill usage and points - instead of me wasting them on Throw Dirt and Smoke Bomb when they should be on Bladestorm...

Yes! I completely agree.
I believe they are using the system done in Toontown. There it makes sense if you've played it. Use a lvl 1 gag, that is one point, lvl 2 gag is 2 pts, etc. But in TT you can only carry so many gags at once and the damage difference between gag levels isn't nearly as vast. Yes, you can increase your skill gain by trying to use more low lvl gags but you can only do that to a point. In this game the damage of advanced abilities can far exceed that of low lvl abilities. I have 4 points in my grenade. I realized I made them completely useless for skill gain since only 2 or 3 grenades kills just about anything. I've been forced to avoid putting points into anything damage related if I can help it. Also its hard to tell how much rep a particular attack gives you. |

This game is full of rhymes. This game is really lame. They treat everyone the same. Even the players worthy of fame.
