there are three types of skills, combo skills, activatable skills and passive skills
at the top of the skill menu are your combo skills, with the dagger and cutlass, press the attack button at the end of an attack to use the next combo skill.
for the grenades and pistol, hold down the attack key to use "take aim" (pistol) or "long volly" (grenades) the doll's combo skill lets you attune targets, and the staff has a 1 attack combo.
the activatable skills appear at the bottom of your screen when you weild the weapon, you know about these already though.
passive skills take effect immediately after learning the skill and the effects are permanent, you never have to re-activate a passive skill, you'll always have it's effects.
