In June 1623, Dixie Bull was trading for furs in Penobscott Bay, Maine, when a roving company of French pirates seized all of his provisions, leaving him destitute. Fired with revenge, he and his brothers Johnny, Fred and Dan traveled back to Boston, assembled a crew and entered upon a career of piracy. Famed as "The Dread Pirate", derived from his attack in 1632 on the settlement of Pemaquid, Dixie became the first pirate known to prey on shipping off the New England coast.
