You can launch your boss battle repeatedly until you are on a winning boss battle crew.
Yes you can participate on anyone elses boss battle, until you get to the point to play yours.
If your at the play boss battle point, and you play someone elses boss battle and win then, it will count as yours also.
Once it counts as you having "beaten" your boss battle, either by initiating it and winning, or being on someone elses and winning, then you can only repeat it by being invited to someone elses boss battle.
