In reality... the era of pirates we tend to refer to...
Alot of pirates were sailors that had been sailing for various sides in a lengthly war. Large numbers of these sailors waging war on the seas, could not find work when the war was over, placing vast numbers of out of work fighting sailors into the various seaports. Work being scarce forced many into piracy. Indeed a hard, tough life.
