I thought that was the problem. Makes it a bit difficult to work cooperatively with random players as the canned chat system is very limited in scope and hard to use (at least for me).

No, it looks like this recent build has removed the free chat option for now.You'll have to hand over DXD codes to anyone you want to talk to in the game.
