I know that I find myself on both sides of the philosophical question. For example, the Catacombs glitch at the top of the stairs, I do use for leveling up grenades. But grenades are their own special problem. You have the problem of learning the two types of aiming them, PLUS the struggle to survive once you do learn how to aim. Enough raiders make it through that wall to make you have to pay attention, anyway. But I get disgusted when I see an idiot with a repeater cheat, leveling up their dagger in that same place. Likewise, it is pathetic to see someone leveling up their voodoo staff from that same place. I find myself asking, "did they make it to level thirty without learning how to sail to Kingshead?"
I guess the real problem I have, is with the grenades. In real life, a single grenade would kill everyone nearby. In game play, they scratch monsters insignificantly. Since the metaphor starts out broken, it seems reasonable to cheat, to bring grenades a little bit closer to reality. But even mastered, grenades are an unusable weapon...whenever you are in a situation where you might need to use them, doing so would send your pirate to jail.
About the cheats, in general, there is a level of sophistication required to learn just how to do one - a brand new player is not going to stumble across one. By the time you figure out how to use one to your advantage, some aspects of the game are already repetitive.
