I know there is a bug where if you shoot a flagship, grapple it, then sail away you become "invisible" to other ships, and you can shoot any ship except for another flagship without getting hit. My crew did this today and we sank lots of ships without getting hit once. We must have sunk more than 50. We were onh the ship for an hour.
