That part of the quest requires digging up treasure chests to find the iron bars. As you run around the island, a green circle will pop up on the ground and you'll see "Press Shift to dig" appear. Dig there, and if you're lucky you'll find what you need.
Sometimes you have to dig in different places to find the right spot or you can try the same spot over and over again.
