I'm about to master sailing (happening tonight, come hell or high water).
And yes, for a while, I too hated sailing. Completed the teleport quests as soon as they came up because I'd always get sunk.
I won't be maxing my broadsides. Mostly because I'm having decent luck killing everything with 4 points to a side, and I've put a lot into speed (there were times, early on, times I feel like getting out and pushing). Both sailing and reloading.
Trying to decide where to put my remaining point.
Haven't put anything in ramming, take cover, or open fire, and only one point in tacking. I like to stand off and lob fire in.
I also tend towards galleons more than frigates (though the gold cap essentially forced me to buy my War Frigate...)
