Interesting idea mate, I like it. But if they didn't do something, I would be very disappointed. They would just follow you around and do nothing? Kinda boring. I want a monkey that can revive me, a dog that can get me ammo when I'm low in tormenta, and a parrot that can pickpocket the local navy. Now THAT is my idea of a good pet system!
