The game takes in between Movies 1 and 2, with the entire series taking place roughly at the end of the Golden Age of Piracy, which, to most historians, ended circa 1726. The first submarine considered to actually be a submarine was created in 1620 by Cornelius van Drebbel, who was able to keep the thing submerged with a crew of 12 in the Thames River for 3 hours straight. However, the first submarine to be used in battle was the
Turtle, in 1776, although it failed miserably. The first hot air balloon flight, manned by an actual person, took place in 1783. Just thought I would clear that up.
Pirates would have no real use for a submarine or hot air balloon anyway. After all, it's not like we could have the ability to shoot broadsides underwater, and dropping lowly grenades from the sky wouldn't do enough damage before we were shot down by a rogue cannon ball.
