Ever heard of lead poisoning? Steel can't really poison you. Lead is more dangerous! You can get an infection and die! (Being sarcastic.)
Anywho, gold trading and giving is pretty much useless until clothing items and all that good stuff comes out. What would you do with it, buy a Frigate? Until the treasures are tradeable too, there is no point in giving gold.
