I've found that the target ship LEVEL (not type) drives the treasure rewarded. I always chuckle when I see captains shy away from corsairs...they don't know what they are missing.
I get about 3k per hour sailing. I get 10k per hour on darkheart. I get 40k per hour cheating at blackjack. ymmv
