It makes perfect sense to me!

I think it has a lot to do with the goals we had set (consciosuly or unconsciously), prior to the unexpected update, that all of a sudden we were unable to achieve within the anticipated time frame. Other than that, I'm glad the game is more difficult now, too.

Level 40 Syndrone - once a player hits lvl 40 they begin to find the game boring and old
Some people who have reached 40 might have begun to find it boring, but I know I haven't. As Rose mentioned, one of the main things that keeps us coming back are our friends and guildmates. I still have a couple of weapons to master and have another character midway through the game who I aslo plan on taking to 40. But, if not for the friends I've made in the game, Im sure I wouldnt even have cared to take the first one to 40. Not because I don't like the game, but because I like people! Which brings me to one more thing I like about this game...

I like that there is very little opportunity for one person to spoil the fun of others. In Toon Town, once you started a task, and got shut in that building or factory or mint, you were at the mercy of the players with you. It often took quite a bit of time to get a group together to complete a task, and then one person could ruin the fun of everyone in the group for however long it took you to complete it.

Here (if the problem is a player on your ship), you can dock your boat, take them off your friends list, and the problem is solved almost immediately.

Additionaly most items you need for a quest (or targets to level weapons on) can be found in a variety of locations with minimal effort. So, if a random player is somehow annoying you, (which rarely occurs anyway), you can easily leave, and go get what you're looking for somewhere else. Or, you can just switch servers and go back to the same location (since no one server has an advantage over the others, as Nutty River did in Toon Town).
