The invasions are considerably nicer on non-ideal servers!
Yes, from what I have seen, the enemies are less of a hassle to defeat, and without all the lag, the invasion itself is a heck of a lot more fun to participate in. Like the Boss Battle, levels and numbers of pirates participating seems to have a direct effect on the invasion as well.
