I think Disney intended for the dig spots to be a challenging part of the game, you are meant to have to find them, now in my opinion, once you have found a certain dig spot you should be able to mark it on your map and add it to a compass setting so you can easily find it again if you need too. But ya, the dig spots in my opinion they should light up with an X to hit shift when you step near them but not until you are on top of them like now, it would just make the game more realistic.
