Indeed the gold collecting is not terribly difficult, depending of course on your notariety and sailing/cannon levels. Of the two top end war-class ships, speaking of the Galleon and Frigate, I find each to have strengths and weaknesses that make them each suitable to certain purposes. For solo hunting, or hunting with a single gunner, I find the Galleon more useful, strictly from the size of the cargo hold and power of the broadside. With 2 or more gunners, I sail the Frigate (yes, I own both) for the fore-facing guns. The target is half dead before we get into broadside range, and a single broadside is enough usually to sink whatever mark we're after ('cept those ******* juggernauts of course). Having max'd both sailing and cannon, most of my trips out have one of two purposes: acquiring wealth for myself or crew, or assisting with leveling those skills for others.

One side note I'd point out is that anyone can drive the boat once its lauched, so I sit on the cannon and let guildies/crew rack up the sailing xp with the stronger broadsides of the war ships against whatever level target max's the xp gain. It is also important to note, for those who don't already know, that you can max both cannon xp gain *and* sailing xp gain on the same kill (220xp is it?) by positioning yourself appropriately.
