When I made my new pirate, she had some "tough times" at first (gold wise).. but after a couple of plunder runs it adds up. She got her first war (galleon) around 20 something and about half way to a war frigate now... So she's made quite a bit of gold already.. Things don't come cheap, even for us pirate
Its just a matter of much time your willing to put in to get it.
