Definitely sounds like either a heat or power issue to me. My desktop has this problem at the moment as it can do anything else for hours on end but once I'm in a more intensive application like POTCO for about 5 minutes, POOF. Its specific problem, though, is that the power supply is not large enough (in regards to wattage) to support my video card so it's actually unable to supply enough power to all of my system's components. I need to buy a new case (no good ventilation path in current one) and power supply for my problem though.
Overall it does sound like a hardware issue specifically in relation to overheating or the power supply itself. Try playing the game with the cover of your computer off. If you see an improvement, heat is probably an issue. As Zep mentioned, mostly likely the video card though the processor could be plausible depending on how the computer case is designed for air flow.
If you see the same results, it may still be heat or an issue with the power supply like my desktop has. If your computer is under a warranty, have it checked out properly (either through the manufacturer or store your warranty is through) so that it doesn't become void. If it has no warranty left and you don't feel comfortable troubleshooting the insides, definitely find a good computer service shop to have it looked at. Heat and power issues are pretty serious if left unhandled as overheating can cause other parts to fail and power supply malfunctions can cause other problems and potential damage to the system.
