DirectX8 doesn't support shaders, so you can't enable shaders when you are running with DirectX8. Incidentally, this might be
why it doesn't lag as bad as the others. Have you tried disabling shaders on OpenGL or DirectX9 to see if it smooths out there? A lot of cards have performance issues rendering shaders.
