I guess you missed this part:

In essense what I'm saying is that:
All things being equal, the sloop being smaller, faster and quicker is less likely to get hit then a galleon. These are inherent attributes of the two ships and have nothing to do with the captain or anything else.
You're quite right, knowing your enemy is important regardless of ship type.
