i am pretty much in agreement with everyone. it is very difficult to sail alone and if you do you need to stick close to an island so you can dock quickly if damaged.
sailing experience does go up faster and much easier to just use that, but then why would we not to build crews to help on the cannons as well?
i have been sucessful a few times on my own by using teh tactcs listed above but much more sucessful when part of a larger group - a few of us sort of formed an armada
