War Sloop worth it?
Today I just reached 20k gold and level 15 sailing, and my thoughts were:" Should i buy the war sloop, and use the sloop to get a war galleon, or is a war sloop a waste of 20k,and should just save for the war galleon?" I wouldn't know because I never owned a war sloop.
Davy's thread states: "War Sloop: In my opinion, the best ship for those who don't have speed upgrades. Very fast, fairly good health stats, adequate number of cannons cannons, broadsides, cargo space, and crew space. I rate this ship a 8.5/10.:ship: War Galleon: Fairly slow ship, but lots of cargo space, quite a bit of cannons, broadsides, and crew space make this a fantastic ship. If you have the speed upgrades, pick this ship if you can't afford the War Frigate. Great boat, but save up for the War Frigate if you want to wait. I rate this ship a 9/10.":ship: I need some opinions on whether or not i should buy it, and ill total it. I just cant decide myself between those 2 quotes. Happy pirate'n, maties! :piratewheelgo2::pirate3: |
I would say yea! It still holds quit a bit of space for plunderin and its fast and has pretty good health.

Depends on how you feel about sloops and how you sail. I prefer sloops over the other ships because I like their speed and agility so for me the answer is a resounding yes. Others who prefer either galleons or frigates would probably be better off skipping the sloop and saving for the war frigate or war galleon.
The regular frigate is an excellent little ship and can take on any enemy ship out there and is very tough. If you look here (scroll down) you'll see that it has some advantages over the war sloop. Better armor and a little more fire power for example. All boils down to how much you car about speed and agility. If you have owned the regular ships of each class and you prefer one over the others thats the first war class ship you should get. Because the war ships are about the same to drive as their regular class counterparts. If you still can't make up your mind try sailing friends ships to see what they are like. |
how many broadsides does the war sloop have? how much cargo? statistics would probably help. Currently, i have just a frigate.

My opinion on the War Sloop:
- Fast - Good maneuverability - Great for SVS (with solid crew) - Great for Island hopping - Fun to sail - Why not own all 3 War Ships? LOL Robert Darkskull Pistols N Bladez :ship: |

If you really love Ship vs. Ship (SvS) then get the war sloop. If you are trying to raise gold, save up for the war galleon...it pays for itself quickly (much faster than a war sloop or a war frigate.)

I'm actually disappointed at the stats of the war sloop. it costs 20k, and most stats are lower than my regular frigate's, which costs 5k. I mean, even though it's fast and agile, it doesn't make up for its stats. Like dan said, it matters whether or not you care about speed, but i don't think you get the bang for your buck.

a war sloop is the fastest of all the ships you can get to islands fast and its the best for svs to i use the war sloop alot
|
The War Sloop seems to be better than the stats say.
I can make fast turns and dodge enemy fire most of the time. The only downside I can see is that it doesn't hold as much cargo as the other war ships. The War Frigate would still be your best buy. |
Regarding speed:
All trips you might make to a specific island in questing, will be about a minute of sailing. (If you TP to the right place first, of course.) Cutting off 2 to 5 seconds from those trips might not be worth it. In SvS, speed makes a difference, but nowhere else. Shots from NPC ships can be avoided just as easily from a war galleon as a war sloop (it goes by the skills of the captain - tacking/windcatcher, etc.) So, unless you love SvS (and are a competent SvS captain) I'd skip the war sloop and get the war galleon for big plunder & fast money. War frigate is showy like desolation, but its so-called advantages are not worth the extra gold, in my opinion. Note also that the pitch and yaw of each cannon on a war sloop varies more than a war frigate (and cannon pitch and yaw varies a lot more on a war frigate, than on a war galleon.) So if you get a war sloop, you're inadvertently being cruel to your gunners (unless they memorize every cannon offset.) For plunder, if you sail alone a lot, then you will want the heavy-duty broadsides of the war galleon. |
My experience is very different from Edward's. I agree with Mac that the Sloop is a much better ship then the numbers suggest. It is not only much faster and more agile then other ships, it is also a much smaller target.

1. Use cannon only - park my ship at a good distance from the enemy ( just beyond compass range) tag it with thunderbolts so it comes towards me and once in compass range start hitting it with fire or lead. Sinking the ship before it can broadside me. In this case I don't care what kind of ship it is, as long as it has a cannon and floats. 2. Using strictly broadsides. I n this case I prefer the sloop first and then the frigate. How anyone can stand driving the big, fat, slow, lumbering, clumsy, sluggish barge we call a galleon is beyond my comprehension. I'd rather swim out and bang my head against the hull of the enemy ship then sail solo on a galleon ( not that I've actually tried this technique). 3. if my target is in a cluster of nasty looking enemies, draw it out with cannon till it is alone then attack it with broadsides. Ship choice is the same as number 2. I also prefer the sloop for quest that require particular ships ( say the ever allusive Corvette). You can cover more ground faster and if you see one off at distance you can catch it. That said, if I have a reasonably capable crew and the object is plunder then I like the galleon because then maneuverability and speed aren't so important and the extra cargo room is. For helping crew mates get rep I like the frigate, it has the most attack options and can take a beating if necessary. This is getting longer then I like, but I'll make one final point. I prefer the sloop because it suits ME. What Edward or others say will not change that, not because I don't have a high regard for their opinions, I do, but rather because through my own experience and experimentation I have learned that the sloop fits my style to a T. Others, through the same methodology reach other conclusions about what best suits THEM. The only wrong answer is to let others decide for you instead of finding out for yourself. |

Golden Luck at the tables is the fastest way to get all 3. As well, it isn't necessarily the fastest way to get all 3, reason being: a) you start with 20,ooo, of which may either be invested in the War Sloop or laid in wait for the War Galleon; b) the point of similarity where both situations merge at a destination is the point where you get both ships first; hence, the question is, can you get 40,ooo with a War Sloop first or can you get 20,ooo with a non-war ship and then 20,ooo with a War Galleon sooner?
