good place to train cannoning?
where/how is a good place to train cannoning? im level 5

Crewing up, and shooting at whatever the captain designates. Not sure there is any particular place. Once I get my sailing skills up good enough, I sometimes go out off of padres, around the hinter seas area, and would draw in phantom ships, usually cannoning them to death before they got to me, but I was always ready to run to the helm to high tail it if i had to. I've also done that but team up with a friend, one at cannon one at helm, first cannoneer takes out sails as boat approaches, pirate at helm hits it with a few broadsides. Switch positions. cannoneer now at helm gets a few broadsides, and the guy previously at helm can fire a few regular cannon shots at it before it sinks. (may have to find revenants or reapers to take the punishment) With higher level phantoms we both often get 240 reps (120 for sailing 120 for cannon).

Okay, here's my 2Cents on finding large ships =] However, this only really works if you have an experienced Captain, as these areas can be pretty fatal for smaller ships with less experienced Captains. http://i36.tinypic.com/2iuqbuv.jpg (Credit goes to GraceWildRage for the actual map itself- I just re-coloured it =P) Okay, so as you'll see I've hightlighted a chunk of the map by Padres. There is a large purple bit, this area contains lots of big ships, such as- Predators, Corsairs, Storm Reapers, Revenants, MOWs & sometimes Ogres etc. However, if you decide to go further out, into the pink area, Mariners' Reef, you'll come across huge ships, for example- Dreadnoughts, Ogres, MOWs, Warlords, Black Harbingers, Colossuses (or is it Colossi? Lol, well anyway) etc. & I think, if I'm not mistaken, the Flag Colossus sails around there too. If you decide to go back behind Padres, you'll come across lots of Skeleton ships, mostly Storm Reapers & Black Harbingers, but the occasional Revenant can be spotted there too. However, what you'll find depends on the server you're on, I've sailed some servers without seeing a Dreadnought, & I've sailed others where I've seen two, & sometimes three at a time! I'm not saying these large ships are limited to these areas either, this is just a popular place where they all seem to be. If you combine this information with OFxZeppers' information, you'll have your cannons levelled up in no time. =] X |

I love Mariner's. My favorite thing anymore is flagged Colossi.

Here's what I did to get up my cannon skill.
I saved up til 12 or whatever to get be able to max out lightning right away. (I got to 12 just by cannoning when I could while sailing my own ship or by joining a crew and cannoning). Once you get 12 and max out lightning, things get a bit easier in my opinion. If you don't care about loot, take out a sloop in the Padres Del Fuego area (prolly best not to have anyone else on board at all, as for 1: they'll jack some cannon exp, for 2: they might try to steer the boat when you have it parked, for 3: they might man the cannons you want to use). Now find a ship, and get pretty far away from it, roughly about at the end of your Radar screen, so it's just showing up. I find that's a pretty decent distance from which to start shooting lightning at it. Shoot the ship one time with lightning, so that it starts turning towards you. As it's sailing directly at you, aim high and take out 75% of its speed with lightning. Then, as it gets near, pound it with normal cannon balls. Although I'm not 100% sure on how experience works, I'm basically certain that that the number of times you hit a ship before it dies is somewhat determinative of the amount of exp you get for killing that ship. So, this means, take out the sails will get you more rep, and hitting with cannonballs as opposed to lightning will make the ship take more shots, and hence you get better rep. All I know is that I started off by taking ships out with only lightning, hence less shots but more damage per shot. THen I started taking out the sails, and it seemed like I was getting more exp/ ship kill. Curious, I then started taking out the sails with lightning, then using my normal cannonballs to kill it. This resulted in the best exp of the three methods. So, I recommend finding the level/ hitpoints of ship that will give you the most efficient use of exp. Do this til you get 20 and save up to max out fury. I haven't leveled past 20 yet, but I imagine I would use the exact tactic as mentioned above. I doubt I would even use fury at all, because the massive amount of damage it does decreases the exp/ ship you would get (assuming what I've stated above is accurate). Have fun! |
