Poker?

Okay, I know this will probably sound a little stupid, but can anyone explain how to play poker? I'm sorta lost, & I think (not sure) I just spent like 200 gold attempting to play... lol. Oops.
Can anyone explain how to play?

For me its 100% luck, lol. One time I kept clicking "check" when it said i had a royal flush. I guess thats a good hand and I didnt even know it. LOL I like how it tells you what you have so you can try to make an eductaed guess on if its good or not. I managed to pass the quest for Sword and Gun and they both made me play for 400 win on Black jack and Poker. Im still not sure how I did that.

AAARRRRRggggghhh! Check on a royal flush? *sob*

The secret is knowing when to bet. Royal is the best hand so you bet the max. Part of the fun is trying to bluff the other players into thinking you have a great hand so they drop out - doesen't work with the NPC players :sadmh9: So you loose out on that aspect unless you get a private game with lots of PCs.

Actually, you can bluff to some extent. It will start working early on, as if the first two cards you get will seal the game. I know what hands are good, but I'm never sure what beats what, like if a flush beats a 3 of a kind or vice versa.

When your opponents are checking or calling when only 3/5 cards are good enough to give a 5-set good hand, or when two cards of the same are out and they're doing the same, they don't have it. (Whatever it is.)

Where was you when I was clicking "check" :mybadki6:
I now know thats an awesome hand. I guess sometimes that school of hard knocks makes you get there. I still could use a cheat partner on the other side of the table any day :laughks2:

Tobias Blastpigge 06-21-2008 01:08 AM

Well, we're all noobs whenever we start something - its not like we're born playing poker :laughks2:

Guildmates or friends and I will double cheat at the tables - let each other know our hands to we can try to beat the table. Works more often than not but the pot is usually not very big - you have to try to keep the NPC players in the game. Its more effort than going out and plundering :piratetongueor4:

League 06-21-2008 01:42 AM

Not nessecarily: we all are good at something that we just started doing, somewhere or another. And it's not as much effort I find: I promoted a guildmate to the tune of 15000 thousand by playing poker: he had only about 5000 or so. He's the fastest blooming guys spawned.

I've sort of got a little better at playing poker now, I'm winning a lot of the games I play, unfortunately, getting caught cheating often too. =P

As an adult who has never played poker before joining POTCO (no particular reason, just never learned lol) I have to say it was my most intimidating quest when it came up. I learned to play, and win, rather quickly though LOL.
Being the big Disney fan that I am it just cracks me up this is how I "learned" to play poker, lol. :mickeypiratezd4:

Dumb question. What does check mean? How do you know when to check and when not to?

Basic Rundown of Hold'em Poker if you don't care to check out Wiki:
~Your looking to form the BEST 5 Card hand possible out of the 7 cards you see on the table.
  • The more things match...the better...just remember that.
  • Aces can be played low (as a 1) to make a A,2,3,4,5 straight...otherwise it's highest card available)
  • Card values are easy...from weakest to strongest: 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,Jack,Queen,King,Ace

Hands are shown below from weakest to strongest
  • 2 of a kind (two cards with matching numbers)
  • 3 of a kind (three cards with matching numbers)
  • Straight (all 5 cards, numbered IN ORDER...ie...5,6,7,8,9...don't have to be in the correct order in your hand)
  • Flush (all 5 cards have to have the SAME SUIT)
  • Full house (3 cards with a matching number AND 2 cards with different matching number)
  • 4 of a kind (four cards with matching numbers)
  • Straight Flush (all 5 cards, numbered IN ORDER and in SAME SUIT)
  • Royal Flush (highest hand possible...10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace....all in SAME SUIT)

THE TURNS
  • 1st turn...everyone will receive 2 cards. These are your personal cards that nobody else can use. They're the secret of winning. EVERYONE Bets/Checks/Folds
  • 2nd turn...dealer will turn over 3 cards. These are for everyone at the table to use in coordination with the 2 they just got. This is when you have the best idea of what type of hand you have. EVERYONE Bets/Checks/Folds
  • 3rd turn...dealer will turn over 1 cards. Like before, this is for everyone. Now you have 6 cards on the table...make your best hand (as shown above) using ONLY 5 of these cards. EVERYONE Bets/Checks/Folds
  • 4th turn (final)...dealer will turn 1 final card over. Just like before and before, this is for everyone. Now you have 7 cards to make your BEST 5 CARD HAND out of. EVERYONE Bets/Checks/Folds
  • AFTER 4th TURN, EVERYONE SHOWS THEIR CARDS AND WINNER WINS ALL CASH IN THE POT

WHAT YOUR OPTIONS MEAN WHEN IT'S YOUR TURN
CHECK = you are not betting any additional money that round but would like to stay in to see another card
CALL = another player has already placed a bet this round and to continue to play that hand, you must put money in..."check" is not an option at this point
BET/RAISE = you like the odds of your hand, so bet more money to get a bigger pot (pot is amount of money everyone has bet so far)
FOLD = your hand stinks and you don't want to waste money with it
