Sell back on Skills?

So I started Basic about a week ago, and today I signed up for the unlimited. I was wondering if there is a way to sell back skills at a higher level, or if you are stuck with your choices forever?
After 8 levels of slashing, shooting and blasting, do I really have to start a second character so I can make smarter choices from scratch?

Once you put the points on a skill, you are stuck with it. Can't take them back. I think there should be something you can buy to reset them, put the points where you want, but no such luck.

For a game that seems so casual friendly, it seems like a major thorn. I hate using WoW as a standard, because it has many flaws, but one thing I wouldn't mind is a character I could pay to reset my skills. Even if it were only in 1 skill-tree at a time, once a month, or in a hard-to-reach locale that you had to be a decent level to get to... shoot, all 3 would be fine at the same time. Oh well. I may just have to roll another character and hope I get him right the first time. I am only 8 levels in, and it didn't take too long to get here with restrictions, so now as a paid member it should fly by to get another character this high.

yeah the point I put on cleave has left me uninterested in cutlass

I must of been lucky. I put points into stuff I knew I would enjoy, and any extra points I saved or put into a new ability. Im happy with all my choices.

You could always start a new pirate out.

When I started my latest pirate, I made two primary changes to my method of progress.

How I addressed skill points was one of the changes I made.

I only assign skill points as needed, and leave them otherwise unassigned to be later assigned as needed. I have also found that this has helped to reduce the fall off of scored reps as levels are increased. Not to mention helping to solve the problem of wanting to reassign points, by leaving them until you later determine what is most useful to your pirating ways. Don't handicap your pirate choosing to save skill points instead of using them where they may be able help, but if you dont need to use them yet, why not save them?

The other change I made was avoiding the story quest, so it did not inflate my notoriety to quickly.

The big problem is that POTCO is changing the game after it has already started. So what seems like a smart choice now may seem like a horrible choice 1 or 2 or 3 updates from now.

Since you can't update skill points, but the game *does* update (often with changes in the way things operate), the only viable long term strategy is to leave as many skill points open as possible.

I agree whitedog. For all we know they may change it later so stronger attacks net more reps....alot will get the shaft on that one.

Ozmer 05-07-2008 04:08 AM

Yeah, I already started a new pirate and have him to 5 notoriety, my first is only up to 8, and most of that is from doing the voodoo mission.
I've been using the forums to kind of get a gauge on what people think are useful skills. The only one I have kind of nailed down is sailing, I know I want full points in left and right sides as well as full sail for the situational speed boost... and I will determine later whether or not the passive speed boost will be helpful.
The jury seems to be out on what to do with cutlass, cannons and voodoo. Guns seems to be full leadshot, full aimed and full hex-eater as the most popular, but we'll see. Right now I am just doing quests, getting to know the game a little better, and enjoying myself. :)

I always take the basic attacks upto full especially where you have infinate ammo, for example right and left broadsides are a must, as the same with full treasuresesne and windcatcher. also lead shoot and standard shoot on pistol and the basic shot for cannons.

But imo i think you should be able to redistrubute all points once you meet a master level on that weapon, or skill. Even just once would be enough for me, just to redistrubute those 1 or 2 points i put on soul flay, chain shot and scorch.

Lucy 05-08-2008 01:45 PM

Having the requirement of master in the skill sounds reasonible to me and so does only being able to do it once per skill. For me the mistakes made were on like day two or three, before I knew what I was doing, they would not be mistakes I'd make again. Like putting a point in cleave and two points in poison shot. (I didn't realise I had to buy ammo at that point lol , I thought more points would make it work lol.)

i save them up till i have no choice but to spend them on the hand weapons it seem to keep the reps higher as u lvl up
