I purchased a 90-day card at Target, but I would've preferred to have used a credit card from home. This is the first and only MMO that I've played where I chose to use a game card, but I didn't care for the language of the credit card agreement. It seemed to me like they were quick to take their regular installment payment, and just as quick to cut you off from service when you cancel. I'd either want a prorated payment, or I'd expect the service to continue for the entire period covered by any non-refundable payment.
In any case, I wasn't certain that I'd get a year's worth of use out of the game, so I was probably looking at the 6-month plan anyway; the 90-day card at Target was $24.95 (no extra taxes), so I think it is competitively priced compared to the 6-month direct credit card plan.
Personally, I enjoy the game and I think it has some pretty interesting growth potential, but I don't see it ever becoming my primary MMO. I suspect that I will want to preserve an on-going subscription relationship with the game, but I think that, in the long run, I may end up only buying subscription card at retail outlets, after each major patch is added to the game.
After I have this avatar/toon developed to where I want it, I think the only thing that would make me want to sustain a paid subscription in perpetuity would be a really spectacular ship-to-ship PvP, with customized vessels.
