Smoke and Fire?
 

What does it mean when there is a pillar of smoke?

And when there is a patch of fire floating in the air, same question.

For the smoke I suspect that a big enemy that spawns in a particular spot has been temporarily killed and the smoke marks the spot. I was tying to get the warrant out of the Outpost in that cave with all the soldiers, and there is a rather nasty 18 or so level Undead Bandit that comes out of the ground near the entrance. It killed me about a dozen times. Later, when I went back that smoke was there and I stayed and fought several undead, soldiers and other cave-dwellers, but that high-level undead never appeared.

For the fire, I have no idea. It seems completely random. I've seen in burning at the top of the prison cell across from me more than once.

The random burning is one of the things that amuses me about this game. Along with floating pirates and people hopping around like John Belushi instead of running. "Oh look Honey, Port Royal is on fire again!"

Random burning?I thought it was grenades.

Some pillars of smoke is where undead gather. But most fire and smoke you see around are bugs.

I preffer to think of them as photo ops. :laughks2:

I think I have this one figured out. I was standing on tortuga, and my boyfriend (who's computer is in the same room and I can see both screens at all times) shot fire cannons from his ship at the island, just playing around. His cannons landed not far from my pirate, and lo and behold, a spot of fire and a pillar of smoke appeared where they landed. :)

Yes i know how this happens if you teleport/blow up on ship/anchor on ship/End pvp when you were in an area with fire in it will appear somewhere in the next room i still have fire from someones voodoo staff from yesterday all the time
