Making Sense of the Rankings

As a guildmaster, I spend a LOT of time looking at the XD site, and checking my guild's rankings. It's been a beautiful thing to watch Square & Compass ("Pirate Guild 267") slowly rise up the charts. :agapirateju3:

HOWEVER

There have been times when I've talked with other guilds, and comparing each group is usually a point of contention. For me, it's because the rankings don't necessarily qualify skill. Let me explain... :argue:

ENEMIES DEFEATED and SHIPS SUNK are how people usually say "look how powerful my guild is, we've killed so much!" Yeah... but you can sit at the governor's mansion and cast Wither on guards all day to do that. I realize that most of us don't, but you get the point I hope - it doesn't give an idea of how challenged people are.

At the same time, TIMES IN JAIL is usually a sore point for people, when I try to point out that a high ranking in it is a BAD thing. The argument I've heard is "it just means we challenge ourselves!" Alright, I get that... but, again, how do we really know you're not just throwing your low-level players into Tormenta for fun?

So here's what I've got: A formula. :pirate7:

Don't cringe, I'm no math person either. Bear with me.

I've added overall enemies defeated together with overall ships sunk. I've divided that total by the overall times in jail. What this number says to me is "how many enemies or ships does an average guild member get through before dying?" In theory, a higher number means a better guild.

I realize this falls into the same argument that I made for E.D. and S.S., but I hope it gives a slightly better way to measure (i.e. BRAG) regarding your guild's status and power.

EXAMPLE: Square & Compass (Pirate Guild 267)

(As of 02/09/2008)
OVERALL ENEMIES DEFEATED: 184,615 (Ranked 18th)
OVERALL SHIPS SUNK: 31,182 (Ranked 26th)
OVERALL TIMES IN JAIL: 4,215 (Ranked 45th)

(184,615 + 31,182) / 4,215 = 51.12

This means that, on average, one of my guild members gets through some combination of about 51 enemies or ships (mostly enemies, by looking at the numbers) before ending up in jail.

Give it a try, and be as interested as I was to see that some higher-ranking guilds aren't necessarily as great as you'd think, and some lower-ranking ones are diamonds in the rough.

A FEW NOTES: Please don't take you 2 person guild that's been to jail 3 times collectively and post on here "we're amazing! lolz! we got a 95!" ... It's called "sample size." In cases like that, your guild is the margin of error for the ones this is intended for. :137:

The size of a guild, as far as I can tell, doesn't really affect this formula. In theory, this just makes an "average guild member" out of your roster. Of course, if you invite everyone you can and have a bunch of less-than-amazing players dragging you down... well, that says something about your guild's abilities, and that's the whole point of this, isn't it?

Enjoy, and thanks in advance for good (or at least constructive) comments!

Nice formula. I will go add mine up. I think mine should be around 60-65. Thanks a bunch for posting this formula!

Think I might add it up to Davy, just to make sure you don't fudge it. :P

JK, you wouldn't do that Davy. ^^

EDIT: 60 you be not Davy, try 50.89. ^^

I like the formula, but what do you do when your guild ranks in the top 100 for enemies and ships, but not for times in jail? Barring going through your entire guild roster and adding them up that is.

Grizz, you guys are big enough that soon you'll add up on the Times in Jail. You have to remember, most of your members left BTTBS and joined BTTBZ when they were pretty high level and experienced. Everyone else, like Remi's and my guild, added it up from Day 1. My guild is 50.65. ESG (Pirate Guild 6 on DXD) is only 47. Widow Makers is 49.

anybody know mine? yes? no? Maybe?

Hmm maybe we should add bttbs and bttbz together. Gives a better picture of who we are since we're the same guild. But we still wont have the times in jail part for bttbz.

Dukk19 02-10-2008 04:33 PM

What's the difference between BTTBS and BTTBZ?

Pirate Rose 02-10-2008 04:37 PM

BTTBs is the guild we started with, but since our guild master wasn't able to play the game much and canceled his open account, we had to start a new guild BTTBZ. (Cannot assign new guild master when one leaves). So we made the new guild and our active players switched over to the new guild, plus we added a bunch of new BTTBz players. Our inactive players are still sitting in the old guild, and we switch them over when they come online. :)

BTTBs - Bad to the Bones
BTTBz= Bad to the Bonez

Ok if I just take BTTBs stats - we're 100.52

We were in the exact same situation and did/do the exact same thing you guys did. Our guildmaster basically canceled his account. So we all left The Brotherhood and formed The Guardians. I hated to see all our rankings on DXD go to waste, but they had to. I wish we could transfer them to The Guardians... oh well.

Anyways, The Guardians has a ranking of 62.17 :)

I love this formula, lol :D

My question is this, is it stats gained while in the guild only? Or do individual stats move with the player? Also, your formula doesn't take into account PvP stats, which I think are even more evident of guild skill. I mean, sure you could just be slaughtering noobs, but not always, and it'd signify average level of guildies, and skill when battling a non AI retarded opponent.

I don't think stats move with the players, to me it appears that it stayed with the guild.

Regarding PvP, the few times I've tried, I was matched up with levels 10 and below. Hardly fair in my opinion.

thats actually pretty cool

mrcharisma316 02-11-2008 02:46 AM

Guild Rankings are overrated

most top guild add everyone and most guilds i come across who are on the top have players who are horrible players i wont mention any names but inviting people just for the sole fact of being a top guild is not my style

the real stats that matter are personal per pirate stats that shows how good u are:vgrin:

That's the point of this formula - by creating an "average guild member" out of the stats, it actually hurts a guild to invite everyone... since bad players will drag the total down.
