Sailing Skills....

I have/want:

5 Left Broadside
5 Right Broadside
5 Taskmaster

I'm as slow as a snail with my Gallion. Where should I drop my last 10 points?

I was thinking 5 Windcatcher - 1 Raming Speed - 1 Come About - 3 Full Sail. Is that wise? I'm pretty confused as to what skills do what their descriptions say. I heard tacking is not at all useful. Thanks!

Galleons are the slowest ships to begin with. Right now windcatcher really doesnt do anything. I did a test with a friend on war galleons, and we had the same exact speed.

Tacking doesn't do anything either at the moment. Again I tested with a friend, and we turned at the exact same speed, from both with open sails and stitting still.

I like full sail and come about, as well as ramming speed. I wouldn't load those with points though. Maybe 2 in full sail, and one in come about and ramming.

I disagree about windcatcher. I also did a test with a friend, we "raced" light galleons, he had windcatcher maxed and i had it at 1. he was alot faster then i was, pulling away quickly. Tacking tho, i put 1 in that and i wish i could get it back, it doesnt seem to do much.

Id recommand putting atleast a few in windcatcher, i put 4 in total. Taskmaster is a must, max that, i also have 1 in full sail and 1 in come about and feel thats enough. I use them to get out of sticky situations, and usually its enough. Also i highly recommand putting at least 1 in Take Cover, its a very nice skill to have when you get in a rough spot or go against a high lvl ship.

Since this thread is about sailing skills, i don't think this is too off topic, but has anyone experienced the following with ramming speed (got 1 point in it, the speed boost is useful)? Anyway, when I actually have tried to use it in a battle and hit the enemy ship, it's health goes up! I've used this a couple of times to get more experience from a ship: shoot it until it's almost sunken, then ram into it so it gets a bit more health and then sink it, this actually works. Doesn't even matter what the ship is, Navy ferret or an EITC Ogre, ramming speed always heals them when I use it. Could it be that my tiny sloop is too pathetic to ram anything... :) Of course, this has to be a bug, but has this happened to anyone else?

nope hasn't happened to me

Pirate Rose 02-12-2008 11:58 PM

I haven't had that happen to me. But I usually only use it for the burst of speed.

is treasure sense worth the points or not? I just want clarification on it.

I notice a big increase in Royal chest drops when treasure sense is max'd. Of course, it doesn't work every single time for every run. But on average, you get a lot more royals. :)

Yes get treasure sense. I've noticed that even on the crates and regular chests you get a more valuable cargo.

Seriously, I'm trying to understand the reasons for maxing out Treasure Sense. So you get more Royals and bigger treasure drops? That might serve you well in the short term, but over the long haul? Once you reach the game cap of 65,000 gold, the size of any treasure drop becomes meaningless. And even if they increase the cap again, how difficult is it to earn coin? Not very, in my experience.

My first pirate has only one point on Treasure Sense, and I'm debating even adding another. He has bought practically everything he can in the game so far (minus the War Sloop and Level 15 Staff) -- and is currently carrying around 30,000 coin in his pocket. Even once the customization updates happen, I'm not seeing a lot of extra expenditures there.

My second pirate recently had Treasure Sense unlocked, but didn't take it because he was maxing out his gold as it was. He's already bought all of weapon upgrades he can (less the Level 15 Staff) and doesn't have a War ship yet (but soon will -- which will thankfully reduce his $$$). He just bought a regular Frigate he didn't need, just so he wouldn't lose any more money, and has started to carelessly throw coins on the table when playing poker. (He usually ends up winning big anyway.)

Everybody's style of play is different, so there is no one right answer. But, personally, I don't think I'll end up putting more than two points on Treasure Sense (if that). Spending the points on broadsides, ship maneuvers & skills just makes more sense to me. After all, if better skills enable me to sink more ships, doesn't it all balance out in the end?

put treasure sense it gives u a better outcome with treasure

Davy 02-15-2008 01:38 AM

5 on one side, 2-3 on the other (broadsides), 2 on Full Sail, 4 on Windcatcher, 1 on Tacking, 0 on Taskmaster, 4 on Treasure Sense (NOT 5! It is bugged and 4 gives more Royals), and now you have 6 others to deal with :)

I see it as something that benefits the whole crew. The lower level pirates in guilds look for the higher pirates to take them out sailing on their war ships so they can earn gold :)

Take Cover, if I understand the ability, basically makes you immune for a certain period of time? If so that is pretty neat and might deserve a point.

What does Open Fire do?

Is Ramming Speed powerful at all?

kentsboots 02-22-2008 03:27 PM

I too am torn between where to use my skill points , I have 2 in ramming and am dissapointed in it not doing any damage when used , but i like the speed boost for getaways .

Question about open fire skill ,I have 2 poitns in it and I havent noticed it making a big diffeence . When Im at the wheel and i use the skill and everyone opens fire , then I jump off the wheel and run over to the cannon , is the skill still in effect ? or did i interupt it by getting off the wheel ?
