Interested in a book club?

Is anyone interested in having a real book club? I am more than happy to entertain suggestions for ways to make it fun. I am willing to read any book out there and I will even ignore my homework for the chats (real hardship;-)

I would love to be able to do this - mostly for me, but I'm sure that there is at least a little bit of interest out there.

So, I'm begging. Can we pretty, pretty please have a book club????

Oh my goodness, I just started thinking about that right know.
I would LOVE to make a Book Club with you.
It would be so much fun, I have plenty of books to read that I would really never read unless there was someone to talk about it with.
It would be awesome, please let me know.

I would love to have a book club/join one on here.

So, what do we need to do to have a real book club?

Well, a monthly book would be good (we could decide on a genre and then a book from there)
Maybe if a club member doesn't like the book then it would be suggested that they read at least 50-100 pages before "dropping" the book.

For book club meetings we could have IRC chats on a Saturday or Sunday? If those don't work out, then we could set up a thread for the monthly book after everyone is supposed to have read it, and then we could close the topic when we're ready to start discussing the new book.

Maybe we could have a place for author discussion?

While I have not participated in one, I have always liked the idea of a book club. I would enjoy joining in with you all on this.

Good suggestions, I agree with them all except the IRC chat meetings.
Author Discussions would be a great thing, maybe if we get this book club up we could do Author Discussion threads, or maybe the administrators could add a forum for Author Discussion and then we could create a thread for each author we would like to talk about.
Just my ideas.

Well, we need an official thread, and you.. happen to be an administrator.. thus you can make an official thread. We also need something like Tayley suggested, but no IRC. Not everyone could make those meetings. I suggest that we also have contests, like.. who can read the most books in a good time limit(like... 2 months, or so). :bookishfj7:
Then, have about 3 winners of that competition. 1st place, 2nd place, and 3rd place. Each will have a quiz on 2 of their books they read, and if they get the majority of them right then we will know that they actually read those books.

ARR!

Feel free to start a thread for any author you want to discuss - this forum is set up for us to play in and there is no need currently for a new sub-forum. If we get a LOT of threads, then I will create a division.

So far as IRC chats go, why not schedule them and who can show up does. We can move the nights around and post all chats for a particular book together for others to read and comment on. The Harry Potter chat transcript is available now if anyone wants to read what our theories were for the seventh book;-)

I like the idea of a contest, but that one would be too hard to prove - even with a test which I wouldn't want to take myself. Anyone else have an idea for some kind of contest??

Caleb Killagin 01-20-2008 06:22 PM

That's pretty much the only option on a contest if you think about it, if I get another idea about a contest I will tell you.

Harry Potter, that is a great idea for you guys.
I just cant participate, I don't know anything about the books, I'm not allowed. (Seriously, it's pathetic I cant @_@)

quill_fire 01-20-2008 10:30 PM

Harry Potter is awesome. I will participate when I can.

well, maybe we pick a book and then we can schedule a time to meet and discuss the book in chat (java or mIRC) and we can also create a thread here to discuss it. Perhaps say you have 2 weeks to read the book (whatever we decide on) and then the thread will open and I can post some questions in it to start discussion.

Does that sound reasonable? If so, what book do we want to try first?

Great idea Cat!
If you need any help with the book club, I'm free.

Can I start a thread with a poll with 5(or something) options on 5(or something) different books that got the most votes out of how many books got suggested?
And out of those we will all vote for a book and after a week when the poll ends we could choose the book that got the most votes.

If you do that, or don't do that, I still suggest some books like...
The 13 Lemony Snickets Books(They're fun to read, and only take about a month or two to read all 13)
The Mystery of Red Jeracho.. (or whatever it's called)
I have another book I would suggest, but I forgot what is is called.
The Princess Bride may not be a bad book either. ;-)

It took me an hour to read the first one...lol:laughks2: But I have only read the first one, so I can't really talk...

Tepcat 01-26-2008 02:16 AM

I was thinking about the Spiderwick series. I have been wanting to read it and this would give me an excuse;-)

Since we want to keep the poll in this area, I think I have to make it. SO, I'll get it posted. I am going to add an other option to see what kind of suggestions we get.
