On cutlass combos

Hi!

Thought I'd ask this since I haven't found any reference to this anywhere.

Has anyone else noticed that you can skip parts of the combo-series? I mean, when you use skill points, if you wait long enough you can flourish without getting cleave first. This gives the combo sequence Hack-Slash-Flourish (haven't ever gotten further), which works fine. I tried it because I thought it might give higher average damage wrt. time used. Perhaps this is a bug?

Also, I haven't been able to unlock any other cutlass skill untill I've unlocked sweep. The game forces you to take sweep at some point in order to get other cutlass skills. It does not help to skip the training which _really_ forces one to choose to unlock sweep. Has anyone else noticed this?

i just do the whole combo is takes better damage

It could be that the whole combo is better, but anyway, here is the idea behind skipping cleave. :bookishfj7: The average damage/blow min-max calculated from the skill descriptions as they show in my skill panel (current cutlass level 2) gives

Whole combo: 29-58

Without cleave: 30-61 (slightly better, even)

So they are pretty much as effective. After 20 mouseclicks you've gone through the whole combo sequence 4 times and through the "without cleave"-sequence 5 times and then the total damage delivered would be

Whole combo: 580-1168

Without cleave: 605-1225

Don't know how upgrades affect this, but I doubt it makes a big difference either way, if skill points are allocated here. Maxing cleave probably does some good. However, leaving cleave unlocked saves some skill points for other uses.

after u chaing together the whole combo hit the sweep and blade storm right after for one mega combo

Wow Simon, that's really interesting. Does seem to be of benefit not allocating any skill points to cleave.

That's true. But skipping cleave lets you, for example, max sweep, blade storm, flourish and thrust and still leave you five (or four, actually - me and numbers...) skill points to use. And I think you would deliver much damage even with those skills using the megacombo without cleave.

Oh, I forgot, thank you Pirate Rose for the positive feedback.

Very interesting.

Makes me regret getting cleave on my Open Server character.

Still time on Test server to change it.

Yes, cleave is pretty worthless and you will get much further foregoing it with a skill point first. You can also not do the first attack with the dagger by throwing a dagger at the enemy first, then proceeding with the combo.
