1 Year of POTCO since last major update
Time seems to fly by, as it is the start of another summer break, and also marks a year since our loot system major update last summer, and Raven's cove a few weeks after that.
So far, we have gotten: -QAR -Peddlers Merchants (nothing to play here) -Infamy (badges for pvp and svs, nothng new to play here) - 2 new bosses (lv 35) -Bountyhunters, which is still on test. Is it just me, or is POTCO's updates getting slower and smaller? only 5 minor updates in an entire year! lol |
Well. QAR and new bosses were big. So were the bounty Hunters.(on test)
Infamy is also cool too. |
You should have been here in 07' and 08, because we got RARELY any updates....
|
Considering years past, Disney has really worked to give us updates, even if they are "small." Yes, nothing has been quite as huge as the inventory system, but we can't ask for huge updates like that every other month. Disney has a budget to work with, and more specifically, time in with they are able or unable to pull off such stunts. In fact, I'm really quite impressed that they've been able to pop out with this much stuff. And, if you think about it, a lot of this stuff is geared towards the higher level players, even the merchant clothes. Take a look.
-QAR:High level ship. Flag complete with 3 waves of enemies. Long distance cannon range. Strong hull. Difficult to solo if you are not high level, and it's even difficult then. -Merchants:Expensive clothes. The only way you won't get bankrupt is if you're a level 18 that continually goes plundering, or if you're a high level that has had time to build up the money stores. -Infamy:More likely than not, there are more high level players doing infamy than lower levels, because the lower levels know that if they are pitted against a high level player, things likely won't fall in their favor. You also need the right skills to really gain high level infamy quickly, so it is also geared towards higher level players. (This argument imo is probably my weakest) -Bosses:Level 35? The only high level we had before that was Darkhart and Tim or Tormenta, and I could take out both bosses by myself at level 30 or lower. New, higher level bosses, in odd places no less, bring older and higher players back to places like Cangrejos and Cutthroat, which they probably haven't explored in a while. -Bounty Hunters:High level ships, directly attack you, with bombs, firebrand, and some crazy sailing skill. Only target Warships (from what I've heard) and they close off ports as you keep sailing and being attacked by them. DEFINITELY high level targets. They're giving us exactly what we want; more stuff for high levels. The only thing we really could ask for now that we have been for a while is a new storyline and cap increases. |
And you also have Raven's Cove.
A new island, with a new story quests and new enemies. Thats not a major update? |
I agree Crestshot. That's a lot of good upgrades. And compared to 07 & 08, as Jello pointed out, it's a bonanza.
By the way...the Bounty Hunters do attack all classes of ships, not just War ships. I had thought that at first, but it turns out the attacks are based on your plunder ranking (royals), not your ship, so that update works for more levels of pirates. |
All those updates add up anyways, and they (even if they are small) are still a great asset to the Caribbean. What does it take for people to be happy with Disney??
|
I'm not saying these updates are bad, I think it just lacks ones that "keep ppl happy for long periods", like the loot, which has been keeping many people happy for a year now.
These updates are fun, but only for the first 2 or so months. Sinking QAR and hunters are awesome, but doing that everyday for a year is not. I guess I got spoiled by last summer's huge amounts of updates. :D |
The only few updates I really want right now would be a new storyline, a level cap increase, trading (unlikely, but my top pick) and new ships. Anyway, I'm still fairly happy with what we have.
|
I, myself, would love to see new ships be born. So far War is the highest you can get. I want a bigger ship! I also want to see a Kraken. I've heard many rumors that they would be added but never were.
|
For the record, when Raven's Cove came out we knew that there were eight mysterious islands being developed in the phase files and with the release of Raven's Cove, that leaves seven more still in development, not to mention a slowly developing PVP_cove island.
The Kraken itself should have been done long ago, since in 2009 we got a picture of the beast without any textures. Major updates for this game take years. It took 3 years to release Pirates of the Caribbean in 2007 and even then all we had was the black pearl quest. The Black Pearl quest had actor voices from the movies and great animation cutscenes which probably took any extremely long amount of time for the developers. Let's say it takes three years to release a new story quest. That means this is year four without a new story quest(The Kraken). That's actually really good timing considering they've also released more mini-games, Raven's Cove, SvS, PVP upgrades, Scoundrel of the Seas, etc... The big updates are coming but we must realize that the POTCO staff is fairly small, smaller than most MMOs. If it took three years to release POTCO with a full story quest, then just imagine how long it will take for a new Kraken story quest. We've already seen the potential for ship customization and if we're patient, we will get what we want. |
What I'm trying to wonder is what the big summer update will be. Scoundrel of the Seas is pretty good I suppose... but I don't think that its worthy of being a bit summer update. In all the past years, POTCO has given us a really big update for summer (Privateering in '08 or '09 and El Patron's Weapons are examples) and I can't tell what this one is. My opinion on the update on test right now is that it is a very cool update and will be fun, but its like have your vegetables without any meat with it. It'll hold you off but its not complete. What I'm thinking is that this summer there will be a lot of sea related updates, and Scoundrel of the Seas is really just oozing the thoughts of ship customization, new ships, and perhaps storms (although that's pushing it a bit). I'd definitely consider this coming update an important one, as it's going to change the way we sail forever.

Anyone remember when The Black Peark quest was glitched... that took 6 months to fix. So in a year you get 5 ( six counting RC ){ eight counting Fishing and potions } updates? I think that beats 6 months to fix a glitch. You know we used to be able to carry about 10 weapons at a time, and about 10 clothes at time. The only new weapons you got were from those quests that no one does anymore. If you aren't happy with Famed/Legendary items, The QAR, Fleets, Merchants, Inventory expansion, A new island, a new story quest, and Fishing and Potions then I don't think that a update will come that will make you happy.

Well Ruisen, I named 8 updates that came out. I aslo mentioned the Black Pearl when it was being fixed. In a year they pretty much fixed a glitch and that's all. In a year they released 8 minor/major things.
