Opinions on grenades
I'm working on leveling up my grenades, and am wondering what other people's experience has been with the different types available. Are the stun grenades and fire bombs worth the skill point, or would I be better off spending skill points on the passive skills. So far, I've just been using the basic grenade and haven't put any skill points on the other kinds.
I don't really see myself using the grenades that much as I'm terrible at aiming them, but like everyone else who's waiting, there isn't much else to do right now but level up everything. Who knows, maybe I'll get really good at aiming and they'll become my new favorite. ;) |
There are a few threads with lots of opinions about the grenades so do take a look around and do a site search for grenades and see what comes up.
The stink pot and smoke bombs do not actually prevent enemy from attacking you, nor does it even slow them down at all. I mean not one little bit. The fire ones do DOT (damage over time) and may be of some value. The Siege charge are as big as bowling balls, however you can throw them the same distance as your other grenades and they do a ton of damage. The down side to siege is you cannot run while having them equiped, but still worth having IMO. Practice your long throws until you can nail almost anything and you will LOVE the grenades. they are at least good at softening up an enemy before it gets to you if nothing else. Put extra skill points in your long volley to add more damage. I filled up my dots on the basic grenade and have like 4 on long volley. I use long volley even on closer shots by letting go as soon as the meter comes up and it just rocks. |
Although I will probably never use the stink or smoke bomb in battle, they have been very valuable for leveling, and if I were to level grenades again on another character, I would put a point on each of them again, for the same reason. Not only do they afford you more exp points per kill, but if you use both, you also have more of a supply of ammo (which can save time if you're sailing back and forth somewhere to work them).
They can be more difficult to use, though, than the other grenades (maybe because their area of effect is wider?), and it's easy to damage or blind yourself with them. They become easier to use with practice, but to minimize any damage to my character, I usually toss a few of either or both of those, and then switch to fire or basic grenade to finish off the target. Where ever you choose to put your skill points, good luck! I like them better than I used to, but seriously doubt grenades will ever become one of my favorites. :) |
I know i must be missing something extremely obvious here, but.....is there any way to gauge and aim grenade throws? A way to lock onto an emeny and have your throws land on them? The best I can do is get so far away and hope the thing lands close enough to cause some damage....

Nope. :pirate1:

I'm at lvl 21 right now, close to 22. I never stand very far away from the enemy. I've played with the scree angle, and the aim meter, so now I can kinda tell when to let it fly. I rarely ever let the meter go beyond the second line on the meter. Usually my screen is angled down (pulling the mouse toward me). Kinda need to just play with the angle and meter for the distance you're comfy with, and see what works for you. I do make sure the red circle is around them. |
I just got my Boom Balls tonight and leveled them up to 10 in about 3 hours. Very fun AoE trains... reminds me of my days as a wizard in Cobalt Scars.
1st Skill I picked up... Demolition 5... may have been a bad choice... I get hit by my own blast a LOT more now. |

Here are some of my tips for anyone who wants them: Use some of your skill points on "Demolitions" (passive skill) it increases the area of effect (for grenade and cannonballs)! VERY useful and makes aiming way easier. To me this is one of the most important things to use on skill points on for the grenade and long volley is the second most important. Want to know a fast way to level up the grenade? Here's my secret: Go to Kingshead with a high level friend that can play "bait" without getting hurt. Since you can't hurt other players just have a friend gather enemies (if they have the staff it helps so they can just give them a blast from a distance). Once they have gathered a nice size group just start grenading! It's faster to level up this way because its much easier to aim when the enemies aren't moving and you get lots of enemies all at once. Hope this helps. :) |
I did 4-14 in about 4 hours in Kingshead. The big front courtyard has that group marching in middle. Lvl 18 Vets x 6. Pull them all at once and walk backwards while AoE'ing them. You get about 170xp per 11 grenades.
Gathering up groups works, but I hate when they disengage too quick before I'm set. With that group of 6 you get a sure amount of xp every time. |
im pretty good at aiming. i mean, i hit my enemy like 99% of the time. i wish i never waisted a skill on stink pots. the exploding area is too big and i always get hit by my own stink pot. but the fire bomb is good. its just like the regular bomb. im not getting smoke bomb for sure. blinding npcs dont even work

I claimed earlier that the Grenades were great...
they don't work perfect everytime, but they can do some impressive damage. I am only level 4 (approaching Level 5) and I am only Rank 2 on the basic Combat Skill I do also have Rank 3 on Explosive Ammo Throw Skill and I find the aiming to be fairly easy (if you aim in the same manner as with cannons). So heres the great news: just came from Cutthroat isle, battle some Undead and some Stumps for points. The Stumps are hard, even with the Grenades. Cutthroat has a good selection of Undead Gypsies, Brigands and Raiders average levels 17 - 27 (a few higher and a few lower) Well... I snuck up on a LEVEL 31 Raider got close didn't alert him took good aim and lobbed a grenade to start the damage (was gonna switch to the pistol to finish him off) but... didn't need to! One hit! with the grenade! BOOM! Level 31 raider...there he was....gone! Sometimes you get lucky I guess. and sometimes you get lucky with grenades. I like 'em! |
woah u beat a stump? those r like in the lvs 35. and u couldn't of hit a raider in one hit, it was probably damaged before.

Level 31 Raider
If I had video...I'd show it ya! Got no reason to lie about that one! As I said...a little luck goes a long way. |
Kinda interesting lol. I'm lvl 21, used explosive with 5 skill pts, and it took 2 hits to get a lvl 31 raider. ;)
He must've been heavily damaged from before. |
2 hits? and you are level 21...
and I am Level 28 (which probably made up the diff?) well, I guess I did okay then! ( although i won't hold my breath to see it again! ) but I saw no damage before I hit him. As a matter of fact, I think the health resets once you lose the attack? So how would it carry damage from a previous battle? anyway, didn't mean to create a debate, know what I saw and what happened, just wanted to relate my experience with grenades. |
