I'm pretty sure that basics were never able to do Boss Battles... although I'm not sure they sent the message to them before...

Basics can't do the Boss Battle, they never have been able to......

I'n not sure, but if basic sent the boss battle invite, they can still play. It worked before, but then again, that was 1 year ago...
