Boarding..?

So, funny story.. We finally made enough to buy a full Frigate. (8K)
So my crew and I go after a couple 21-25s, we get lucky and down a flag and board it..

Wow.. only to get cut down by the navy mobs in seconds. :)
We were only 4x lvl 5s and 2x lvl 12s.

Now my question is can you abort a boarding / retreat?
Is the general level of the crew on enemy ships, the level of the ship?

I think that is correct. When I boarded ships with lvl 5-8 the levels of the crew an average of what you saw as the ships level.
I would presume it would be the same with higher level ships
