Open Chat vs. Speedchat Plus

Ok, well I was just thinking about why POTCO has the two chat options... and I really dont understand it. Why is it that someone who is below the age of thirteen cannot type words that are not in POTCO (very limited) dictionary? Why is it that someone who is 11 cannot type the word "bit" but a 14 year old can? I really don't see POTCO's reasoning for this. If it is to make it so that "kids cant be abducted" or something crazy like that, lemme say this. A 15 year old, who has open chat and can type numbers and all, is just as open to harmful people as an 11 year old. It just doesn't make sense to me why POTCO limits people under 13 to a dictionary. There just seems to be no logic in it for me.

Also, the Speedchat option (the one where you can ONLY choose words from you list) I believe can be hard for the game, and should maybe be removed, unless the child is 4 or something, in which case they probably shouldn't be playing a game like this. I was leveling Lyze once, and someone who was a couple levels higher than me started attacking my kills. I told him to please stop, and the ? came above his head, saying he was Speedchat. I tried to use phrases from the Speedchat list, but none said anything like "Find yer own kill!". He kept following me, so in the end I pretended to go AFK, and he left. Still, it is hard...

Anyway, I know many of you will disagree, but could someone please explain the logic to me of why people below 13 should be limited to POTCO's dictionary?

Mainly because younger kids are not as experienced as older players and could make bad decisions. This is disney's way of preventing that so younger players won't be upset with others. Or some player says something very rude and they do not understand the meaning, so they ask their parents. . . in which they ask - where did you learn that word. . . kid stops playing game = less $ for disney.

Potco is not the one limiting the chat. They are parental controls. The option is there so that parents can make it so that their kids have a limited dictionary.

Still, it doesn't make sense to me why they have all those words that they dont let speedchat plus users say, numbers for example. Seriously, most of us speak Speedchat Plus fluently. Won, to, tree, for, hive, sticks, sven, ate, nina, tin. I dont see why they just unite speedchat plus and open chat, and just make it so that curse words, and other inappropriate words wont go through. Why is it that a 12 year old cant say bit, but a 13 year old can? Doesnt make sense.

While there are ways around the SpeedChat Plus whitelist, Disney at least has to make an attempt for legal reasons and those protective parents.

As for the complete Speedchat, I do not see many players with this, however in a family game, sometimes options such as this are needed. Up until recently it was the only public chat option in Disney's other MMO, Toontown. SpeedChat Plus has since been added and I hear Open Chat may come eventually. It is probably more understandable for that game, targeted at younger ages, but whether they should be or not, very young children may be playing Pirates as well.

Disney does it for safety....I am sure, the 1st incident that happens(hopefully wont happen)...Disney will shut down potco.

Tiberius Fireskull 09-25-2010 08:04 PM

Eh, I guess I can see why parents may want their kids to have a certain chat setting... but I still don't see why POTCO doesn't just filter out only swear words, etc.

Captain Jason 09-25-2010 08:09 PM

Most people lie about their age when making an account anyway for this very reason.

Davy Darkrage 09-25-2010 08:14 PM

Numbers are filtered to prevent the sharing of personal information.. As I said, while there are ways around it, Disney must at least make an attempt to prevent it so should anything ever happen, they can't be completely to blame.

Sadly your wrong. Your parents can create a Disney account and link your account to theres saying they are your parents then they can have all the options for your account inculding speed chat or open chat.

The only way for someone UNDER 13 with their age in their account is if they transfer their pirates to an open chat pirate account. You have no way to change to open chat, as D doesn't allow it.

Pirate J 09-25-2010 09:14 PM

For some reason you can say RAWRIMADINO in speedchat plus lol P.S Thanks Crest for telling me that :P

Tiberius Fireskull 09-25-2010 09:14 PM

Actually, yes you can. You can go to the parental controls and change it. Thats what happened with my brother. Although we had to phone them because the process is confusing.
