Very frustrated, bugs or the way disney intended?

This is my first game I've played in the beta stage, and I'm grateful to be a part of it and do report any and all bugs I've noticed in game.

There are a couple of things I wonder if they are bugs and I wonder if I need to keep reporting them. I wonder if this is just the way the game is.

First thing is your port of call. What is your port of call? I am a newbie level 7 pirate and I notice my port of call changes to whatever island I happen to be standing on.

What is driving me absolutely batty is sailing looong distances to another island barely surviving the long scary commute, docking my boat, paying for the damage to my boat then getting booted from the game only to log back in and be allll the way back at the island I started on and having to do it all over again!! Grrr!! I have been trying get and stay on Driftwood Island to collect all my myraids of wasps, and I will barely make it there, kill one wasp, get booted (I understand things are a bit unstable and I'll get booted, no biggie) and log back on and I'm on the wrong island, far far away! Is this the way Disney intended? If so I'm SO not a fan!

Second is the chat. Am I doing it wrong? I know you need to click the arrow and type in the chat box, but is there a way to chat openly without clicking the arrow and putting your curser in the box? Sometimes I need to say something fast (like, "hey! Help! I'm dying! Can I get some help over here!?!") and it's too much a hassle to find my mouse and click the box and then type. I'm not THAT coordinated. Bleh. Bad chat set-up. If that's the way Disney intended, I'm very disappointed. You'd think they'd program the game to utilize the caps-lock on as the movement and menu prompts and the caps-lock off as open chat.

Third is swimming. There is a hint that says if a crab is in the water to get in the water and shoot at it to bring it up to land. When I am in the water all I can see is a bit of my head sticking out as I'm swimming and nothing else. Can the rest of you actually see underwater?

Fourth is the difficulty. Perhaps I've been too babied by toontown, but this game seems WAY too hard for the level I'm at. The tasks I need to do are to take down some hefty navymen and I'm just a lowly level 7. I also need all these animal parts but I've noticed I usually get more than one monster chasing and attacking back at me so I end up losing or running away almost every time. Does Disney really need four level 13 crabs counter attacking a level 7 pirate? Sheeeesh. Kinda scary, and very frustrating trying to do my tasks. I seem to see more of the jail then anywhere else...

I'm really not trying to complain. I'm having fun with the game and I do enjoy playing it. I am wondering how much of this is bugs and how much is the way the game is.

Thanks for your imput! :)

Release Notes - October 26, 2007
  • Added a "Port of Call" button on the map page, which takes you back to the last major island you were on

You may think that traveling a far away distance is bad. Just wait until you start really getting into ship battle. You take down so many ships, you have tons of cargo and you'll get a ton of gold for it all. You see Tortuga really close, so you head over there to dock and earn your gold. You get the "Drop Anchor" message pop up, and before you click it, a message pops up saying "You have been disconnected from the game". THAT'S frustrating. Most games when they start out have connection problems, so just give it some time. :)

Press "Enter" to bring up the chat box and to start typing.
I also don't like the chat system, because after every message you have to press "Enter" again, which slows down valuable ship sinking time.

I can't see in the water as well, only the top of my hat.
I really don't like the swimming design as much as you do, it just looks weird and the screen is at a weird angle.
I like how the swimming design for Toontown looks. At least you can actually SEE your character swimming. But because this is POTCO, our Pirate would have to come back up for air.

Yes, this game can be a bit difficult to level and earn items and so forth, but we have to remember that this game is rated E 10+, so that means that it would be a bit more difficult then other fun games such as Toontown, because Toontown is aimed for ages 3 and up.
I would strongly suggest that once you get your pistol, that you get the skill called "Take Aim". It tends to do a ridicules amount of damage for such a low level, but it really does help level your character a lot.
Only trouble is that you can only shoot none humans.
Oddly enough, in the latest release notes, one of the fixes said "Lowered the damage taken from the pistol "take aim" skill", and yet... it seemed to have increased the damage for my pistol rather then decrease it.

We all have our opinions about things, so thanks for sharing yours. :)

I also think the difficulty is a bit much for the lower pirates. I've recently started two new characters due to the bug on my big one, and I've been in and out of jail most of the weekend.

The best tip on that I can give is go to busy Oceans (formerly Worlds) and try to find help in the area you need. Once your weapons improve you'll find it much easier, and like Ducky said the "take aim" skill is a huge help. I just wish they'd reduce the tasks a bit until the pirate gets to a higher level, which would avoid a lot of frustration.

A bit off topic but did anyone notice the Undead Brigand or Pirate they've added on Tortuga (I think that's where it is) right outside the cave near the gypsy? It's insane trying to get into the cave now or get tonic from the gypsy; I've had to suck down a tonic while purchasing just to stay alive, or I have to wait inside the cave after being attacked for my health to get back up. Seems like a bad place to put that guy imo.

I agree with the chat issue also, at least on TT once we start talking the box just pops up. It's so hard to even answer a pirate's question, since it takes time to stop what you're doing, hit enter and start typing...and if it's lagging forget it. They're gone before I can get an answer out.

I wanted to give my opinion about some of the questions you have raised.

There is difficulty, but that is easily overcome by battling with other players. I level up fairly quickly just by hanging around and battling stuff wherever a lot of action is. If you see a lot of high level anything, you can join battles that other players are already in. Whoever starts the fight is the one who gets attacked back, so if you are hesitant to go after something because of the level, you can wait for someone else to initiate the battle. For the most part, everyone I have run across is very understanding and supportive of this type of play.

I find that chat to be extremely annoying. It is hard to remember to hit enter first, but besides that, as you mentioned this is a very fast paced game and taking the time to say anything can land you or another player in jail. I can easily play for 2 hours with friends and we barely say anything. We watch each other go to jail wondering why the other one didn't ask for help, but knowing that there probably wasn't time. I don't think that any of us have spelled any words right since we started that game, lol.

I think the difficulty is adjusted often, trying to find the right balance. Now the enemies are pretty aggressive similar to when beta 1 first started.

I miss the days where we could quietly sneak by the enemy ships to get to another island lol

voodoo doll difficulty

First time poster here. There's definitely an interesting array of difficulty on stuff. I think my qualms was with the voodoo doll quests. Fortunately I or maybe she stumbled on me. Anywho someone in game helped me out with what seemed to me at the time some insane leveled critters. (actually they're prolly still insane level critters compared to my cutlass skill)

Wasps (11'ish) I think were just one of the tasks I would not have been able to take down without my newfound friend taking the aggro while me and her gave the bugs the beatdown. I forget at what level voodoo was given (I'm thinking 5, but not sure) Getting to Cuba was the easiest part, and even that was messy when I couldn't Go To her. She might of gotten disconnected or something in the process.

Oh, and then at some point we had to kill witchdoctors. More insane levelness. I have no qualms against grouping with multiples of someone elses to take on a quest. But critters almost double my level seem a bit much to get the voodoo skill.

There.... not the wall of text it started out as. lol

Ive also noticed that there are areas of the game that require a lot of teamwork. The Kingshead quest is rediculously hard IMO. I lost count of how many times I died trying to search all the barrels and crates. And that was with a whole bunch of help. One minute you are fine and the next you are being attacked by several high level enemies at once. The tonics are so slow to regenerate that you can only count on one to save you.

Im one of those people who loves to go solo a lot of the time-but thats simply impossible on this game. The high level ships are much too powerful for even maxed broadside cannons. I love it how I can hit a warship 3 times and barely get its health bar down by half. On the other hand-one hit from it and Im sunk. Again-if I had a full crew on my ship Im sure that would make all the difference. I think Disney really intends for a lot of teamwork on this game.

I also dont like not being on the same island when I log back in. We get discoed so much and it is a pain to have to sail back. Getting teleport helps a ton but not with the wild islands. Also, I hope they make the chat easier to use. I have gulped down way too many expensive tonics from typing the letter "T"-so frustrating.

I agree that it is very hard in the beginning. The "take aim" skill on the pistol is the best weapon-just like others have said. Im much more frightened of high level navy than I am of non-human characters on the game now. With the pistol you can pretty much take out any non-human thing-as long as you arent ganged up on.

I'm at work right now so I can't log into the game to get the exact wording of the "Take Aim", but I know that I'm a little confused as to what exactly I'm suppose to click to activate it (I have the ability to use it, just don't know if I am actually using it correctly). Anyone have laymen's terms to using it?

Regarding the island thing (getting cut off while on one island and coming back on-line on another). It seems that it sends you to the last island you were on WITH THE AREA THAT ALLOWS YOU TO REPAIR/SELL/BUY ships.

And thank goodness I'm not the only one going through tons on tonics--especially when I am whispering to a friend. I hate that the dialogue box is so touchy.

If you have take aim as a skill, all you have to do is hold the left click button down and a fill meter will show up. You hold the left click for as long as you want to fill that meter up. When you let go of the left click your gun will shoot.

FauxPaw 10-29-2007 10:26 PM

Basically with "take aim" you just hold down the control key to get a strong shot. I havent really learned how to control it perfectly-it seems random to me. At times I will hold it all the way til it reaches the top and it will do less than 300. Other times it will do 1000-so for me its kind of random. Maybe others have figured out the exact way of using it. It does a good job of killing high level creatures though. I have maxed the take aim.
