More realistic sailing (like rogue waves, capsizing...)

Hi,

I know it's a game, it's not supposed to be that real, etc... but I was wondering...

It would be cool if Disney put more realistic maritime scenarios in the game (like rogue waves [making you capsize], too many pirates on one side of a small ship affects balance [higher chance of capsizing when tacking/jibing/coming about]), and so on and so on. What do you think? Also, if you agree with this idea, why don't you post some suggestions of what could change with the new higher-realism.

Yeah!!! It would be great!! :d

JackGoldStack 06-13-2010 05:14 PM

i agree it would be in future updates :D sailing need to be more realitic

Cannonfury 06-13-2010 05:43 PM

I wish it would all be realistic....besides server jumping, pvp, and the boss battle, why not make this game more challenging and get rid of teleporting :D

I'd like to see twenty more ship sinking cutscenes that will show up depending on which area of your ship has the most damage, and while sinking have wooden planks fall off along with some windows and masts.

I say sure to this one. It'd be interesting.

angel 4ever 06-13-2010 10:18 PM

sure why not but i dont really want to sink from waves lol that be funny though haha

Not sure about capsizing but certainly crashing waves and squalls would be cool - and putting the Kraken back in would be great too !

I said Sure.

Here are some ideas:
-Rainstorms to slow us down
-Shoals
-Water leaks without taking damage
-Something to repair sails
-Captain's Quarters
-Prison hold
-A realistic speed

Ah, I have too much to say. Those are some of my favorite ideas though.

Sadly, mates - most 'realistic' means a lot more complicated program (aka LAG) at the same it only adds mundane frustrations that most younger players will either not care about or ignore.

Don't forget who Disney markets to gang. It's kids.

Maybe they need a complexity OPTION. Like when you choose Auto or Manual Transmission in a car racing game. You could turn it if you wanted.

Sailing is my favorite part of the game and I think they've done a great job of giving the illusion of sailing and sea combat. So I'm kind of cautious about making changes to it.

In any game there is a trade off between playability and realism. An example in this game might be pistols. The way they are loaded is unrealistic. To be realistic all the firearms would be loaded the way blunderbuss's are loaded. To do that with every gun would undermine the playability of the game.

Also, as Eliza points out, many of these ideas require some very complex computer code which can lead to greater lag and more bugs or glitches.

Not saying I'm against the ideas mentioned, most of them sound like fun, I just hope Disney doesn't undermined the current sailing experience in the effort to improve it.

As far as Eliza's concern that these things could be to daunting for many players, things like storms and such could be limited to special areas of the ocean.

I think that perhaps, if you happen to have someone who's annoying sailing with you on your ship, instead of kicking him off, like some seem to want, we throw them in the bilge for five minutes, or until the captain gives permission for his release.

Ages, and ages ago I played a game (perhaps on my Commodore 64 with a cassette player tape drive) that was about Pirates. Even back then, with the game as rudimentary as is imaginable, the sailing was all dependent upon wind, tide, and seas.

At the very least, I would think POTCO could incorporate wind direction and strength into the sailing program. For instance, a very light wind in shallow waters is ideal for a sloop - but havoc for a frigate or galleon. Deep, open seas with high wind will capsize a light sloop - but allow for a large ship to run at full speed. Ships that sail into the wind make almost no progress, but can make full speed with running broad beam from a strong wind. What if you had to account for the tide in order to make port, or set sail?

It would certainly make things more interesting.

I'd love to battle the Kraken in a horrific storm.

I'd love to SvS in a horrific storm.

Heck, I'd love to go back to SvS, if they put in some heartbeat code that pings Disney's server, to eliminate cheatengine users. 100% in the last year that I've gone back to try again, no matter how good or bad I did, someone would come along in a speedboat (from off compass) and blast several dozen explosive charges in the time it took me to fire a single round shot.

Sorry, back on topic...
  • Rain would be an awesome addition. (C'mon - 100% client side!)
  • Swells in a storm would be an awesome addition. (Even if perfectly rhythmic so that they could be client-side artifacts, still would be awesome.)
  • Random lightning from clouds, tearing away masts would be...um, interesting...maybe not awesome though. But it would be different!
  • Tidal waves that capsize you would be...um, interesting. And different.

Here is something about ships, they used to be so much better than they are now, but nothing like this.

If I could go back, I would return to the time where the enemy ships had crew members, and when you shot firebrand at enemy sails, you could see tears in the sails. It did not do as much damage to sails as it does now, but sinking ships is too simple now.

Here is something I wish they would input/return on all enemy ships though.

-Actual crews that work to fix their ships

-The ability for ships to still drift after their sails have been shot down, sort of like fleet ships. We all know its possible, because fleet can still move with no sails...

-Make it so that you do not completely empty an enemy ships health bar, so that repairs can be made, and it does not sink.

-Options to sink or commandeer enemy ships. (Simply take enemy ships to shore for Extra Gold)

-Add in a bounty system for regular sailing. Based off of how many ships you sink, and the value of the ship you stole, your bounty would increase.

-Have a treaty boat (and possibly a flag to raise to show your Parlay), this would allow for members of your crew to go over to enemy ships to either make a deal with enemy forces, or ambush them after saying they want to make a deal.

-Add in brigs for all ships, each containing chests you can take items out of and put items in. (This is where we could do trading, and this would make more since when plundering enemy ships after yo are about to sink or commandeer them.)

That is all I have on the Ship topic, although I would appreciate weather, it is probably the last thing they need to add because of their heavy lagging policy.

"Okay, man the cannons! She's almost down! (Treasure Fleet) OH NO!! WAVE! *capsize*"

That wouldn't be good, so I said no ;) I like sailing as it is.
