Everybody's the same body shape?

I've noticed that nearly everyone is picking the same body shape for their pirates. The game gives you several choices for body shape, but hardly anybody's making a short pirate, a chubby pirate, an overly skinny or an overly muscular pirate. (Nearly everyone is causcasian too, but that's another story). To me, that's almost a game design flaw because people seem to be finding too many of the choices unusable. Or maybe it's just me. What do you think?

Well, isn't that what MMORPGs are for? To escape reality and become anyone you
want to be, look any way you want to look, and act on selfish impulse?

I'm only short because I forgot to change my height when I made my person. Or else
I would be way shorter.

I have seen at least one dark-skinned female character (dark enough that I assumed the player was going for an Afro-Carribean skin tone) and one short, fat (but Caucasian) male character. I have noticed that most female characters have the same shape (tall hourglass) and most men share the same inverted triangle (broad shoulders and narrow waist/hips) torso.

I have been relieved to notice, at least, that the clothing options have (so far) led to almost no noticeable repeating.

I've been noticing more short chubby guys which I think is really cute when they're fighting. And I saw one lady with hips, only one though ;) I have seen a couple short thin girls. But yeah, not much diversity yet. I imagine when the masses get on, it will be more of a diverse community.

I personally wish we could design the shape of our character's body. Because I have one girl pirate, and she just scares me by the way she looks. O_o

I picked the better looking one from all of them, but she's still weird.

Hey Van.... I'm pretty shallow lol. I made mine on how I'd like to look. I've made most of my online characters for different games for the same reason lol. I think its mid life crises lol. I don't think I could make a chubby one..lol

In honor of this thread, I will make my next character a short, fat, black woman with a hugely tacky, clashing wardrobe.:)
At least I'll stand out in a crowd!

koalita 10-11-2007 11:19 PM

In phase 1 of beta I made a short fat black female pirate. My husband's current pirate is a skinny black man. Very easy to find him in a crowd.

Interesting topic that I thought much about in phase 1. At one point, I created a short, fat, ugly as I could female and found that nobody would choose her to crew (even though her notoriety and cannon skills were higher than others around her) - nobody would help when fighting bad guys - noone would talk to her - unless it was to say thanks if I healed them. Sadly, I decided, people are prejudice against certain body types - even put all this in a bug report. This time around I have 2 pirates - one amazon type (she is huge and scary - LOL) and one normal. The normal looking one gets more invitations for friends, crews, guilds, etc - even though i think the amazon looks more like a female pirate, looks stronger, etc - I do hope we see more body types once it is open!

Blackhole_Galaxia 10-13-2007 05:02 PM

Well thats an interestiong topic. I notice that the girls are all the same body type. But the boys i dont really notice anything the same about them. But im happy with my character.
